The Characters of Tamagotchi

Once of the things about Tamagotchi that has made it so popular is the fact that it, like some unidentifiable mongrel puppy picked up at the pound, changes. Some of the tamagotchi literature out there (eg. Tamagotchi Dai-Hyakka - Tamagotchi O Sodaterutchi!! by Keibunsha) go to great pains to explain that Tamagotchi is a space-exploring alien life form discovered by Professor Banzoh and his assistant Mika-Chu, which adapts very quickly to its new surroundings.

But a simpler explanation is that it repeatedly changes form as it goes through its life stages.

Each of these forms has at least 5 descriptions:

  • the little blurb that Bandai America has on their site
  • the various blurbs that the creators of Tamagotchi and Bandai Japan have scattered in various Japanese books
  • the characters as they appear in Telebi de Hakken! the animated Tamagotchi tv show
  • the characters as they appear in Hanjyuku-Tamago ("Soft-Boiled Egg", currently running in Young Jump Magazine), the twisted but very cute manga strip by Kenji Watamabe, one of the character designers for the Tams.
  • and last but not least, the observation of tam owners such as myself.

Since you can just go to the Bandai Site to look at the first type of description (unless they've taken the Tamagotchi Pages down... a pox on them!), and since I've never seen the animated show, I'll just write about descriptions 2, 4 and 5.

Here, then, are the characters of Tamagotchi. (Each with their very own page, because the tamagotchi area seems to be the only one getting any attention.. *sob, sob*)
