Further Ramblings for April

April 14th, 1998

I finally found some time to make an animation of poor little Muldy.
Crying Ginjiroten

Once I finished the animation, I had my sister press the B button, and I started a new TamAngel. The plan was to treat it perfectly as an Obakechi 2 (or, as the Bandai Page calls it, a "Ghost Junior") and then keep it ill and starving. If the obakechi stage counts for anything at all, it should turn into a Taraten or Pukuten... if the Obakechi stage counts for nothing, it should become the Oyajiten. Incidentally, Bandai US now has US-style drawn pics of the Angel characters on their Tam page...

However, the Angel Seth (Yaaay! Nicholas Cage! City of Angels! yaaay!) went to bed as a maruten before I could make him sick (around 9:23 pm). I suppose I will have to sicken him tomorrow...

April 15th, 1998

Unfortunately, I had an exam today. Feeling that I needed all the luck that I could get (I had left my trolls [remember them?] at home, but my Transmetal Dinobot Happy Meal toy was tucked into my Jeans pocket), I decided not to keep Seth sick and starving. I did go as far as turning the lights out on him, but since I felt I needed him to "pray" and bring me luck, I healed him and kept his stats, if not at a constant 100%, then at least between 50 and 100%.

Even so, he beeped for me once (after the exam) and I missed two "prayings"! I only caught one! And I missed his walk!
*sigh*
I have a feeling that Seth and I aren't going to be very compatible... Maybe he's annoyed at how wishy-washy I was today.

Oh, and yesterday Megara was kind enough to introduce me to MUD-ding! So I spent some time today learning to navigate in the Newbie area, and forgot all about Seth, who went to bed with far too little on each stat. Sorry, Seth!

April 16th, 1998

I repeated yesterday's non-experiment by making Seth sick, then healing him and caring for him as well as I could. No easy feat, considering that I just received a new buddy for Seth... a clear orange Umi de Hakken Tamagotchi!

These Ocean Tams are reputedly the most difficult to raise... A Bandai rep is quoted as having said that most people will never get to see an Adult-sh (adult sakana-chi).

No kidding! My Ocean Tam (no name yet, but since it's orange I'm considering Aquaman or Benjy Grimm) was set at around 11:05, hatched from his Egg of the Ocean into a little Plankton-chi (obviously a zooplankton) at 11:10 am, became a little Kurage-chi (Jellyfish) at around 12:15 pm, and went to sleep at about 7:00 pm. In the meantime, here's all that happened to him:

What an action-packed day! Especially since it seems to lose a heart every few minutes. I wish that I could raise my first one to adulthood, but it doesn't seem too likely at this rate... after all, I have an exam or workshop on the 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 25th next week... Which will hardly leave me much time to fuss over little Benjy! (or Aquaman. I haven't decided yet.)

Check out my New Ocean Tam Page(s)!

April 17th, 1998

My Ocean Tam was selfish twice today, at 9:11 and 9:59. Then he was quite well-behaved for the rest of the day, probably because his discipline was now at 100% (or 14 bars).

He was attacked by the polar bear at least 5 times... the first time was at 9:03 and the next was at around 9:54, so I think that the rumour that the bear comes every 50 minutes might be true. The octopus appeared at least 5 times as well.

What was really horrific to me is that the Ocean Tam got sick twice... the first time, he needed 4 shots of medicine before he got better! Then he got so sick that he needed 7 shots!!! He played a jolly little tune when he was all better, but in the meantime it was frightening... it was just like the death sequence for the Gen 1 tams, when it's sick and it keeps beeping and nothing seem to work!

Oh, and Seth turned into a Kuriten this morning. Just like Mulciber the Ginjiroten, I am experimenting with not giving him any candy until he is 7 years old. Hopefully this will keep him from turning into twins.

April 18th, 1998

I went to see the movie "Hana-bi ( Fireworks )" by Japanese actor/director/screen-play writer/comedian/all-around entertainer Takeshi Kitano, aka Beat Takeshi. It was a very violent, but emotionally powerful film... I had to hide my face at some particularily gruesome scenes. But it was touching seeing the main character, Detective Nishi (seemingly able to communicate only through acts, rather than words) try to ease the pain of his dying wife, and try to get her to break her self-imposed silence.

Unfortunately, since I didn't want my Ocean Tam to get ill or eaten, I had to pause him. Seth, on the other hand, was left to fend for himself, as were my newly-mated Mesuchi, Jean and her baby.

April 19th, 1998

Woohoo! This morning, Benjy of Clan Aqua (ie, my ocean Tam) woke up and immediately got sick. I was rather worried about him, or more accurately how he was going to survive tomorrow, since I had an exam to do, among other things. How long was Benjy going to stay a Kuragechi? Would he always be this difficult to care for?

Around 11-ish, after I had confirmed that yes, the Polar Bear does seem to show up every 50 minutes or so, I got a call from an acquaintance. As we chatted on the phone, I heard a manic beeping coming from one of my tams. It was little Benjy, whirling across the screen faster and faster until he became... An Ototochi!
An Ototochi!

I have yet to translate the character info, but he sure is cute! His discipline dropped to 6 bars when he transformed, but it's been making a comeback, up to 12 out of 14 bars as of 6:06 pm. His minimum weight is 15 grams, and he swims on and off the screen at regular intervals. When he poops, the poop trails along after him until you flush it.... ick! But I guess it can't be helped, because in Japan (gold)fish droppings are famous for tagging along with their, er, creators. He used to sleep from 7 pm to 9 am... I wonder what his schedule will be like now?

Oh, and FYI, "ototo" is a Japanese infant-word for a fish ("sakana" or "uo")... an English approximation would be "fishie-chi".

On the Tamagotchi Angel front: Seth just turned into the accursed Twin Angels again at 6:00 pm! ARGH!

Oh, and if I haven't mentioned this yet:
Wet 'n Wild's shimmery metallic colour "Bliss" is awesome as a substitute for chipped-off paint on the Blue Tamagotchi Angels' wings. It's not a perfect amtch, but it's passable and, more to the point, will match your nails. A good lipstick to go with "Bliss" is the Violet Shimmer colour by the Body Shop.

Incidentally, I think that Mojo 2 took a day more than Benjy to become a teenager, as did my mesuchi. Hmmm... Maybe it's because I hatched them late at night?

April 30th, 1998

Oh, and I got a package from someone in Australia. It included a postcard book on Port Macquarie, and a Bunny Rabbit Farmyard Friends (kinda like a Beanie Baby, only less attractive and rounder) and... A VR Pets Penguin, which I don't think I've ever seen before!

Grrr. Shortly after I headed off to university, I checked on my UmiTama to see the following characters on screen:
denchi[MISSING].
denchi... Japanese for "battery". I could very well guess what this meant.

I raged and sobbed. Wasn't the battery supposed to last 2 months?

When I got home, I replaced his batteries, to no avail. He was lost to me, forever... However, I did get to make BMP's (from which I will create gifs) of the Kingyochi and the Ototochi, which swim across the screen before the timer is set. I then stuck the tab back in, and found out that according to the package, the UmiTama's batteries only last 1 month (probably because of all the tapping, etc). In any case, I only got 17 days out of my Ocean Tam...

Out of sheer loneliness and desperation, I decided to hatch my Brand New Virtual Reality Pet Penguin. Among other things, my sister (Dead to tams since last Spring) expressed an interest in raising this one "once yours dies", ie. once the first penguin, which I am raising, passes on. It's really easy to raise, and cute... I'm thinking of making a separate little page for it, just like my KingPet (Alas, now relegated to alarm clock status... its screen so faint I can hardly see it).

It spends most of its time waddling around what appears to be the Antarctic Ice shelf (there are lots of mountains, and no apparent ocean. Perhaps this is a penguin chick that has been separated from its rookery?) and due to its beautiful simplicity, its page should be nice and easy to create and maintain.
