Umi no Tamagotchi: Tamagotchi Ocean

The particular ocean tam that I have is Clear Orange, with a white border and yellowy-orange buttons. The other colours can be seen on Vickie's Page, under her Ocean Tam section.

Its packaging is quite adorable; it depicts a summery ocean scene on Planet Tamagotchi. The top part has an island, below which are the waves. The water becomes an increasingly darker shade of blue as it goes past a Tamagotchi submarine-boat, a lifesaver, and finally the pink corals of the Tamagotchi Ocean.

The full name is Umi de Hakken!! Tamagotchi, meaning "Discovered in the Ocean!" and the package explains that these are the Sakana-chi (lit. "fish-chi") that live in the oceans of Planet Tamagotchi, with an aside once again pointing out that these are "NEW chara(cters), marine version".

The back of the packaging is green, and explains that there are plenty of dangers in the ocean. (A blocky kuchipatchi and mamechi are shown in lifesavers. The mamechi squeals "Ooh! Scary!" The Prof and Mikachu are shown in swimsuits and snorkel gear.) There is a detailed and illustrated explanation of the dangers that await the unwary Sakana-chi or Ocean Tams.

• Stats Meter:

  This icon is a round bubble with the classic scale motif. The five screens are: Age and Weight, Water Quality, Hunger, Happiness, and Discipline.
  • Age and Weight:
    Fairly self-explanatory. The Age is in years, and the weight is in grams. The Plankton-chi in the Baby-sh stage is 0 years old and 1 gram in weight; the next stage, the Kuragechi, is 5 grams minimum and remains 0 years old for the first day.

  • Water Quality:
    The brand-new stat! Since your Ocean Tam lives in water, it is important to keep the water fresh and clean. There are four skulls, which start out empty. Whenever a pollution skull gets filled, it has to be "flushed" empty using the flush icon. If all four skulls are filled, the entire screen turns black!

  • Hunger:
    As usual, there are four hearts. One meal of o-den fills one heart.

  • Happiness:
    Again, four hearts. One game or soft ice cream cone fills a heart. An Octopus attack will empty all happy hearts.

  • Discipline:
    This time around, each scolding only fills in two (2) bars of discipline. The Plankton-chi never seems to need discipline, so it stays at 0 % until it transforms. The Kurage-chi starts out at 2 bars.

• Meals:

  This icon is a little squirming worm.
  The two food options are meal and snack/candy. The meal is o-den, a Japanese hot-pot kinda thing that has all sorts of goodies (eg. boiled egg, gelatinous konnyaku squares, hanpen triangles) stuck, in this case, on a bamboo skewer. The snack is a huge soft-serve ice cream cone. The Ocean tams do not appear to eat the cone. Oh, and the Ocean Tams will eat candy during a "selfish call", but its happy hearts will not be filled.

• Game:

  The icon is a treasure chest.
  The game screen shows two treasure chests, with flapping lids. Press button A or B to choose the left or right-hand chest. If it contains treasure, you've won the round. If it's empty, you've lost the round. If it contains an octopus, look out!
  
  There are 5 rounds in all, and winning 3 or more will fill one (1) happy heart.

• Toilet Flush

  The icon is a little toilet, just like in the Osuchi/Mesuchi tams.
  This icon can be used to either flush away Tama-poop, or to empty the pollution skulls. Each flush empties one skull.

• Calling/Discipline

  The icon is a pair of clapping hands.
  This gets your OceanTam's attention whenever there's trouble. It is also used to discipline your tam; one appropriately timed scold = two bars of discipline. When rightfully scolded, the guide says that your tam will "make a sound of contrition", but in actuality it just looks mad and snarls.
  
  Legitimate reasons for discipline are: Not eating when hungry, not playing when unhappy, refusing medicine and, of course, beeping for no reason.
  
  If you accidentally scold your tam, it will look puzzled and hurt, and a "?" mark will appear over its head.

• Medicine and First Aid

  The icon is a little bottle with a cross on it.
  Use this icon to heal your tam when it gets sick or injured. And if it refuses treatment... see above.

• Lights

  The icon is a little sun and quarter-moon.
  This is a little complicated, but here goes...
  
  From 6 am to 7 pm, the screen is lit by the natural sunlight of Planet Tamagotchi, so the screen will be lit regardless of whether the light is on or off.
  
  At 7 pm, the sun suddenly sinks, so that the screen will be plunged into darkness. But since your tam may still be awake, you may wish to use to Lights On function to keep the screen brightly lit. However, when your tam beeps at you and goes to sleep, you should turn out the lights for it... unless, of course, it's in trouble.

• Attention

  The icon is much like the regular tam's scold sign (a shouting little head) only this time, it's a shouting little fishy silhouette.

• When first hatching your Ocean tam, try leaving it alone without setting the clock. The ocean-egg will not appear, but instead, you will see bubbles, and a sneak preview of some of the sakanachi characters!

• Instead of sliding to a clock screen, the Ocean Tams just directly cut to the screen. The beeps are much softer, and the game music is played only at the beginning of each game (rather than during each round, like the previous tams). All of the sounds, from game music to angry music to panicky help-me sounds, are new.

• The screen background is a blue and white wavy design.

• When transforming, the Ocean Tam swims around and around the screen, gradually increasing its speed, accompanied by some wild beeping.

• Info on the Tamagotchi Ocean (from the little care-taking guide, ? Bandai Japan):
  • "The Tamagotchi Ocean has a depth of 3 720 000 kilometers (about 2 306 400 miles), and can be found on Planet Tamagotchi.

  • The sea water of the Tamagotchi Ocean is not salt water, but juice, and sometimes even alcohol (Tamagotchi cocktail).

  • (This one's a bit of a puzzler.)
    The ocean floor is just like the earth, and comes in beautiful strata according to depth.

  • It is the mecca or major activity center for all Tamagotchi surfers. Its main export is takuan (pickled daikon beets).

  • The Tamagotchi Ocean contains such islands as MushiMushi Island (literally, "Bug-Bug"), Natsu-Fuyu Island (lit. "Summer-Winter"), and Rezor-to Island (lit, "beach-side resort"). These islands shall be discussed more in depth some other time."
