"Finfin: The REAL Computer Creature" was a program created by Fujitsu Interactive; it is (or was) an innovative "virtual pet" program that presented you with an entire virtual planet, which you could only observe at certain set "Contact Points". Your mission; to enjoy the ever-changing, realistic world of Teo, and to make friends with the wild alien creature "FinFin" by singing and talking to it, and offering it "Lemo fruits" (Elmo fruits in the Japanese version) at one of the interaction points.
On February 16th, 1998 (just barely missing Valentine's Day!), an online pal was kind and
generous enough to send me her barely-used copy of the FinFin Program/Double CD, complete
with whistle and microphone!
I began to explore the world of "Teo", and grew entranced by the lush, fantastic beauty that
Finfin and his fellows populated. I detailed in my Virtual
Pet Diaries my interactions with Finfin... my hopes and aspirations... and various sights
and sounds that I hoped to enjoy in Teo.
Then, tragedy struck.
March 8th, 1998, not yet a month since Finfin had arrived, a strange error happened to him.
Whenever I clicked on his icon, there would be a quiet humming as the CD ROM drive started up...
the little "hourglass" mouse pointer would appear...
And then nothing. Silence. The CD ROM drive would stop spinning, and the computer would, for
whatever reason, refuse to let me access the Finfin program.
I was never able to successfully reinstall FinFin, and had to console myself by visiting the official FinFin website. Even this simple pleasure was soon denied me; Fujitsu Interactive went out of business, and after offering some code necessary for the FinFin Deluxe Program for a few months, the former online home of Finfin was cast into the darkness.
Farewell, Fin-fin... may your haunting song echo through the ages...
