My Virtual Pet Diary

December 6th, 1997

Today, at 6:00pm GMT (about 10:00am my time) I attended a group hatching, where everyone in the Tamagotchi Club hatched their eggs at the same time. Unfortunately, only three people attended the hatching... The good news is, of course, that it makes it that much easier for me to win the contest. There are three divisions of the contest: Longest life, secret character, and funniest story.

I hatched two tamagotchis today. One is my generation 2 tamagotchi, which is a lovely/gaudy shade of transparent pink, with yellow buttons and the word "Tamagotchi" on the top in Gold lettering. The other is my clear green generation 1, which is a factory blooper with yellow buttons. I am naming them after my friends/acquaintances Meagan and Linda, who are moving away.

The pink tam is Mel, and I have decided that he will be "male". The green tam is Glinda, and is quite obviously female (I like to alternate). Since I hatched them simultaneously, I want to raise them in the exact same manner, but I'm not sure if I can... Already Mel and Glinda are out of sync, and when playing the happiness-increasing game with them, I always win with Mel, but have already lost three times in 5 hours with Glinda.

Sometime eleven-ish, Mel fell asleep for a five minute nap... with two empty hungry hearts and two empty happy hearts. I had time to nourish and cheer up Glinda before she fell asleep, so already I seem to be showing favouritism...
*sigh*

The pair woke up from their naps a year older, and weighing in at a hefty 10 units (lbs for Mel, oz for Glinda... how fitting). A short while after that, they transformed into their toddler forms; Glinda became a marutchi (A large white blob) and Mel became a tonmarutchi (White blob with pointy thing on head, which squishes up and down). They now have teeth, which they use to chomp away at their bread (Glinda) and their hamburgers (Mel). They also use their teeth to snap at me when they're mad.

At 1:15, both apparently called me when they didn't need anything, and refused to eat when offered food. I scolded them both. Sometime around 4:45, I lost three games in a row when playing with Glinda, so that her weight went down to the minimum amount of 10 oz. At 8:00 pm, they finally went to bed, each with one hungry heart missing, and 25% discipline.

December 7th

I forgot to write a mission statement yesterday. My goal with these tams is to test out a suspicious tip I read in an old Japanese magazine. In the magazine, a young girl claimed that she had gotten the secret character four times using the following method:

Although I find this tip to be suspicious as heck, I intend to try it out on Mel. If I succeed, then I'll get Zatchi the Alien (Gen2 secret charcter) for the second time in a row. If I fail, which I suspect I will, I will get kusatchi, which I have yet to see in the flesh, as it were. Wish me luck!

Update: At 4pm, both tams called me and refused to eat, so I scolded them. Their discipline is now at 50%! Then, at 5:45, they both got so sick that they needed two doses of medicine each.
:(

They went to bed with full hearts, weighing
13 lbs (Mel)
Mel the Tonmaruchi!
and 11oz (Glinda)
Glinda the Maruchi!.

December 8th

Today, Mel and Glinda called me, and then refused to eat or play. I scolded them, bringing their discipline up to 75%. Sometime around a quarter-past noon, I heard a shimmery sound. They had transformed, into:
a tongaritchi

and a tamachi!

At last, my "experiment" can commence!

*rubs hands gleefully, then pats Mel*

Sorry to do this to you, Mel, but sacrifices must be made in the name of scientific enquiry...

*Mel jogs silently in place, opening and closing mouth*

PS. Their discipline went down to 0%, and their minimum weight is now 20 units.

Mel went to bed at 9 o'clock with three poops next to his futon.

Glinda went to bed shortly after.

December 9th

My experiment is over, almost before it started. I did as the magazine said, ignoring Mel's hunger calls and feeding him cake until his weight ballooned to 98lbs, and at least 5 poops had taken over his screen, forcing him to jog somewhere outside the frame. Then at 4:19pm, I heard a familiar, slow beeping. Sure enough, Mel was tucked into his futon, all the poops having disappeared. After the final beep, he was whisked into his wobbly spaceship, where he is right now "flying back home".

Farewell, Mel! Believe it or not, you will be missed!

Meanwhile, Glinda is doing quite fine. I was on the bus for most of today, so I may have missed some discipline calls. As of 17:08 pm (PST) she is:

December 10th

Today, Glinda called me selfishly (or as the KingPet instruction manual puts it, "screamed unreasonably") at about 11:00 am. Otherwise she has been well-behaved and low-maintenance, as opposed to the evil Pan-Pan the King Pet, who I believe was sent here by my enemies to distract me from my world-conquering. After all, how can I have time to conquer the world when:

And most of the time he doesn't even look like a panda! He's got no mask, whenever he eats he turns into a baby-chi, whenever he plays the "dodge..." game he turns into a shiro- baby-chi... does this guy have a major identity crisis, or what?

After I updated this, several things happened; I heard a "blip-blip" noise, and the screen showed a tropical island complete with palm tree, as well as a poop and the call icon. I panicked, not sure which to take care of first. Eventually I put a hat on Pan-pan, flushed away his mess, and the call icon disappeared. Later, the call icon and the poop icon were both lit up, but Pan-Pan turned into a giant panda and shook his head whenever I tried to flush it away! I "educated" him, and his meter went up by half a unit. The same thing happened again, at around 6:00 pm; when Pan-Pan went to bed he was at 1 full unit of education. Oddly enough, Pan-Pan defied the manual by not going to bed at 9:00 pm; I had to turn his lights out for him. Then, about 10 minutes later, he woke up and was bouncing around, so I had to turn the lights out again! How annoying...

December 11th

Glinda got sick yesterday, so she should transform sometime today. I'm hoping for a gingirotchi, or maybe the secret character, which I have yet to see on the Gen1 tamas. She was selfish at around 11:00am today, so her discipline is at 75%.

Pan-Pan, meanwhile, did not wake me up with his alarm at 7 am, so I overslept. (Later, I discovered that the alarm icon was turned off.
*blushes*)
At 11:00, he played a hurried rendition of "Happy Birthday", and turned into a... a.... I have no idea what he is, but he now has black eye patches, a face that looks like this (+.+), stubby black arms and stubby little black legs. He also turned a year old (until then, the status screen claimed that he was 0 yrs old). When he was 0, his minimum weight was 4 kgs; I wonder what it is now? In any case, King Pet appears, like Penpy, to be one of those annoying pets that don't tell you what all the possible forms are, and instead transform into something different everyday. Arrrrgh. Once, I got a whale with a penguin head on my Penpy; I hope I'm not going to get anything funky like that. Incidentally, I have decided that from today on I will not feed Pan-Pan any snacks, just to see what will happen. The next time I choose a panda, I will feed it nothing but snacks, just to see what that will do... and so on.

At about 1:10 pm, I heard a shimmery sound. Glinda was transforming into a... maskutchi!
A masukuchi!
Arrgh! Nothing personal, Glinda, but I really don't like staying up 'til 11:00 pm making sure you get to bed all happy and well fed... Oh well, maybe Glinda wanted to make Pan-Pan feel more at home by putting on a panda mask of her own. Her minimum weight is now 30 oz, and her discipline went down from 75% to 0%.

December 12th

Woohoo! My last two exams (for this term) are over and done with! Unfortunately, since I was studying or writing the exams or taking the bus from 10 am to 8 pm, I didn't have much time to care for my virtual pets. Also my cold medication made me sleepy, so I couldn't turn the lights out for Glinda. She went to sleep with everything full, 50% discipline, and 33 oz in weight. Panpan, on the other hand, had an eventful day; he was selfish twice, had two weather calls (rain, both times), needed his poop removed 19 times, and each time needed two meals and a game. He transformed at 11 into an adorable teddy bear-wearing-white-tank-top- and-spats form. I discovered, incidentally, that whenever there's more than one poop, they stack up on opposite sides of the screen, and you have to flush each away individually. Bummer.
:(

December 13th

Pan-pan's discipline meter is all filled up, for the first time ever! yay!

Oddly enough, Pan-pan continues to "scream unreasonably" even when his discipline is full... I wonder why? Also he didn't transform until 1:00 pm today. When he did transform, he finally turned into something resembling a Panda! He's got black ears, black eye patches, black arms and black legs. He's so cute... Meanwhile, I felt so ill today that sometime around 6 I paused Pan-Pan and went to bed. My sister baby-sat Glinda for me.

December 14th

I'm feeling much better today, although I couldn't get to sleep last night until 3 am and I was woken at 7 am this morning by Pan-pan's alarm clock. Pan-pan was unpaused sometime 10-ish, and Glinda was returned to me by my sister at around 11 am, with 75% discipline. I have yet to see if the pausing will affect Pan-Pan's rate of aging.

December 15th

Last night, Glinda got slightly ill, requiring one shot. This means one of two things: either my previous mistreatment of Glinda (see December 12th entry) is finally catching up with me, or she'll turn into the Secret Character!

Pan-Pan meanwhile did not transform; however at 3:45 am this morning, I thought I heard the familiar, hurried tones of "Happy Birthday" coming from across the room. This morning, before Pan-Pan woke up, I checked his history screen, and sure enough, there was a picture of Pan-Pan at age 4: The head-shaking Giant Panda that shows up whenever he's being disobedient! Now, whenever he eats or drinks water, it actually shows him, as a giant panda rather than a baby-chi rip-off, eating and drinking and etc! YAAAY!!! He's so cute... Currently, all his meters are full, and he weighs a whopping 52 kgs... He's heavier than I am!

Glinda, as of 12:51 pm, continues to be a Maskuchi (age 10, weight 36 oz, Discipline 75%, all meters full).

At 1:15 pm, Glinda made a shimmery sound and turned into the secret character!
... Bill Clinton is a Tamagotchi?
My only complaint is that she no longer looks like a "Glinda", and that she turns away from me and wiggles her backside at me whenever she plays the game or is happy.
*sigh*
Kids nowadays...

December 16th

Pan-Pan and Glinda were pretty much on their own today, as I had to help my mom with shopping (my mom was feeling most unwell) and I had to do some holiday baking. And now, a recipe for Cranberry Shortbread Cookies a la Minui;

Bring Butter to room temperature. Measure out sugar, flour and cornstarch. Chop up dried cranberries. Cream butter. Gradually mix in sugar. Mix in sifted flour and cornstarch until electric mixer gives off burning-plastic-smell and begins to whine. Shriek as mixer burns hand. Hand-stir ingredients until arm-muscle is pulled. Sternly resolve to exercise more often. Begin lightly dusting surface with flour. Accidentally dump a lot of flour on Tamagotchi. Shriek again and try to blow flour off, succeeding only in getting the flour in eyes. Roll out dough, wrap in wax paper, let rest for 45 mins in fridge, start on next recipe (which, incidentally, results in disaster). Neglect King Pet so that two poops, a skull, and a weather change are waiting when all the baking is done. Also neglect tam so that its happy hearts drop to 0 for the first time ever. Take dough out, roll again and cut into various shapes. Put in fridge for another 30 mins. Bake for 25 to 28 mins, or until bottom and edges are golden brown. Continue to bake. Continue to bake. Finally get fed up and move the oven rack closer to the bottom. After another 30 mins, take out burnt cookies and put in next batch. Take care of tams.

December 17th

AAACK! Funkiness alert! Funkiness alert! Yesterday, Pan-Pan didn't change form (he only aged a year) so I assumed that the head-shaking panda form was his permanent adult form. This morning, I heard the "Happy Birthday Song" at 7:25 am, and checked the history window to see if he'd changed, only to find... THE HISTORY OF A CAT!

Six years old, just like Pan-Pan; years 4 and 5 were the same, just like Pan-Pan; the only difference was that the everything indicated that I'd been raising a cat for the past week! Feeling rather shaken up, I decided to wake Pan-Pan prematurely. The clock function did show a bouncing panda head for the progression of seconds, but I was feeling rather insecure about my grip on sanity. So I turned on the lights for my King Pet, and discovered... a KOALA! A cute koala, mind you, but nevertheless... A KOALA! My head-shaking panda had been replaced with a koala, shimmying sideways across my screen. My head spun. Perhaps it was all that time I'd spent at Country Mouse's Komputer Koala page? Or perhaps all pandas unexpectedly turn into marsupials at age 6? The worst part of it was, although all other functions clearly indicated that this "koala" was, in fact, my panda, the history window still insisted that it was a cat; a large fat cat, to be exact, wiggling across the screen and opening and closing its legs! I can't wait to find out what happens tomorrow.
:(

In other news, a young lady from the tamagotchi-mailing list, also a King Pet owner, asked me to let her know if/when my king pet's timer speeded up and it started aging quickly. OH NO! PENPY SYNDROME!!

Around 11:00-ish, the King Pet froze up on the clock screen and would not unfreeze. I was forced to reset, and start over with a frog. Now, the history screen indicates that I have raised one 6 year old cat and two 0 year old frogs. The tadpole hatched from an egg. It appears to eat flies as meals and beetles as snacks.

Later on, I was stricken with a terrible case of peer pressure. Since someone of the Tamagotchi-l mailing list was reportedly caring for 12 v-pets at once, I decided to start my Pocket Love and my Gen 2 tam as well. The Pocket Love was programmed with the stats of myself and a friend, and the Gen2 tam was named White Queen in honour of the cold weather we're having, as well as the X-men villainess of the same name. I hatched WQ at 7:02 pm, lost at least 1 game, let her fall asleep at 7:47 pm missing a hungry heart, gave her a shot at 7:57 pm, saw her change into a
A tonmaruchi
at 8:12 pm... at which point in time she fell asleep, missing a heart each.

Whew! Here's everybody's stats:

December 18th

Today, at noon, Pan-Pan the Second sprouted front legs. He required some discipline, as did White Queen.

They went to bed with:

December 19th

Feel sick. Me no write more today. Darn virtual pets won't shut up. GAaaack....

White Queen was selfish 1:30 ish... PanPan2 turned into a weird frog creature with big black pulsating eyes...

The King Pet later went "Penpy": in other words, the timer sped up so that minutes passed like seconds. I took good care of it until it claimed to be age 9 (ages 3 to 9 were all the same; a big ugly frog with speckly stripes down its back); then I didn't care any more and tried to kill it. It accumulated four poops and two skulls (apparently the maximum) and turned into a snake at age 10. It died the next morning at age 12: the words "Bye!" and a crying frog flashed across the screen. By pressing the middle button, I was also able to see the age it died at.

I will be writing in page 2 from December 20th on.
