Vancouver: Quite Possibly the Best City in the World

We Canadians are usually a fairly demure bunch, saving our flag-waving psychotic energy for important things like Stanley Cup Hockey Games and the ensuing Riots, and possibly the Olympics.

However, most Canadians couldn't help but feel a little gratified when Canada was declared, overall, the "best country in the world to live in" by the United Nations.

And who could blame them? Considering how bad the economy is, Canada's doing pretty well for itself... reasonable cost of living, universal health care and employment insurance... heavy government funding for education (though it's never heavy enough), and beautiful scenery and wildlife! Even in urban areas! (Some parts of Vancouver, for example, have become hideouts for local coyotes. Primus knows how they got there...)

Even in this all-around wonderful country, however, there are some places more wonderful than others. One of these places is Vancouver, British Columbia, home of the West Coast Headquarters of the Aptenodytian Empire (Interested in joining our Plot to Conquer the World? E-mail all inquiries to twotone@canada.com!)

Vancouver has, among other things, a NBA basketball team, the Vancouver Grizzlies (one of the players, "Big Country" Reeves, lives on my block) and a NHL hockey team, the Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver also has Stanley Park, a park dedicated to the guy that in whose honour the Stanley Cup is named (got that?).

In Stanley Park, you can find the enchanting

Vancouver Aquarium

, with its Killer Whale and Beluga Whale educational facilities, and first-ever all-whale Radio station, Orca FM! (Apparently, when applying for the license to ORCA FM, they were asked which of the two national languages of Canada they were using, French or English. No-one knows what the Aquarium's response was....)

Other Beautiful Things in the Vancouver Area...

Minter Gardens

In 1977, Brian Minter discovered a breath-taking natural landscape several miles away from Vancouver. In 1980, he opened Minter Gardens, a beautiful garden of sight and smell.

It's a bit of a drive from Vancouver (several hours) but well worth it! Also quite popular for weddings...

The Vancouver Public Library

I'm working here for the summer, creating a webzine for youth1! The VPL is one of the biggest and most beautiful Libraries that I know of, with an innovative "cut-away" design that uses a lot of large-paned glass windows to show the inner workings of a library. It also has a good multilingual and WebAccess section...

My University

This university is not quite as recognizable as the Other BC University, SFU... Some SFU buildings guest starred in the X-Files as the Pentagon :D My univesity's main claim to fame is that we have the clock tower that the loony guy who was afraid of blood and thought that his appliances were talking to him climbed up to shoot all the people.

(In an X-files episode, that is. I don't believe this has yet happened... but considering the kind of pressures that hound the average university student, it's only a matter of time.)

More Stuff to Come!
