Longhorn Timeline (Now with Permission from Chris123NT!)(Help keep this list up-to-date. Please email me and fill in the missing information. Thanks to jabster for 4039 and 4066.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 3683 – Leaked November 19, 2002. First public leak of Windows “Longhorn”. This build is from Lab 06; contained extras from the Avalon lab that are not seen in other builds (new display properties dialog box, etc). Some features were broken, such as Internet Explorer downloads.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 4008 – Leaked February 28, 2003. Second leak. Contained a cleaner version of the “Plex” visual style; Internet Explorer downloads fixed, more sidebar tiles.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 4015 – Leaked April 2003. Third Leak. We prefer to call this the build from hell. Not much different from 4008, except the new style taskbar was enabled by default and could only be disabled by turning off the sidebar. This build consumed HUGE amounts of memory in very little time.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 4029 – Leaked September 23, 2003. Fourth leak. Displayed the beginnings of the new style Explorer windows, contained a new sidebar clock.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 4051 – Leaked October 25, 2003. Released at the Professional Developer Conference, this build was supposed to be quite stable, as it was the first developer preview of Longhorn, but it ended up being horrible as far as being able to develop and test sidebar tiles went. It just leaked too much memory which hindered the ability to do anything useful with it. Introduction of the “Slate” theme, “Plex” was removed.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 4053 – Leaked March 1, 2004. Explorer memory leak seems to have been fixed for the most part. More responsive than 4051.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 3718 – Leaked April 30, 2004. First build with DCE Effects.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 4074 – Released at the WinHEC Engineering Conference on May 4, 2004. New features include the Jade theme, more sidebar tiles, etc.
- Windows "Codename: Longhorn" Build 5048 – Released at the WinHEC Engineering Conference on April 25, 2005. New features include a complete rewrite, new polished theme, increased stability compared to the alphas.
- Windows Vista Build 5112 – Released to MSDN and Microsoft Connect testers on July 27, 2005. Now identifies to "Windows Vista". Increased Stability.

- Windows Vista Build 5231 - Leaked on October 9, 2005. There are actually 2 leaked compiles of this build, one is the winmain labs build (which is a month younger then idx02) and idx02. idx02 is recommended. This build includes a lot of clean up and bug fixes that were absent from 5219.
- Windows Vista Build 5259 - Leaked on November 30, 2005. Once again, there are 2 leaked compiles of this build. One is the TAP program build and the other is 051113-2100 Compiles (A few days younger compared to TAP). Key features include: a redisgned aero, the ability to change the aero theme colour, new and redisgned control panel UIs and loads of other features throughout the OS.
- Windows Vista Build 5270.09 - Released to MSDN and Microsoft Connect testers on December 19, 2005. This build is fairly similiar to 5259 but features more stability.
- Windows Vista Build 5308.17 - Released to Microsoft Connect testers on February 22, 2006. Vista is now considered "Feature Complete" meaning all the planned features in Vista are now there (though some may not even fully function yet or have some serious bugs). This is the first build to released as a Staged install and actually have it work correctly. It also includes improved explorer.exe stability over 5270 and improved compatibility. Glass has some new bugs (especially with Nvidia cards). The biggest milestone: Sidebar has finally come back. A second build, 5308.60, was released on March 1, 2006. This build has improvements to Server code, mainly 12 DC fixes. For some people it has improved stability and performance. This build was unstaged.
- Windows Vista Build 5342.02 - Released to Microsoft Connect testers on March 23, 2006. The builds have included better driver support, better program compatibility and over 5,000 bug fixes. Sidebar had new gadgets as well. Thanks to a new employee on the Vista team, testers got this build as a gift under one condition, to not leak it. Only Connect testers got this build.
- Windows Vista Build 5361 - Released to TAP Program testers on April xx, 2006. Features included new wallpapers, improved UI, new gadgets. This build has not been leaked as of April 16, 2006 (date of writing). It's January 25, 2009 and it appears of have not been leaked.
