I know how to move the beam around, but how does the vectrex or vector games in general control angles? I can move the beam in my o-scope in a square pattern by putting it in XY mode and giving it {(0,1) (1,1) (1,0) (0,0)}. I can then integrate the XY signal to give the square sides (instead of 4 vertices). But what if I wanted to do angles? That means I would have to give the scope an X signal with one slope and a Y signal with another. The slope was constant in my square case, but I would have to change slopes for angled lines. I can only think of three ways to do this: -calculate the slope and and draw it out with a DAC (would allow arbitrary angles but may show slightly slightly bent digital looking lines depending on the resolution of the DAC) -multiplex among several different integraters to give different slopes (perfectly smooth lines, but limited angles) -somehow use a DAC to control an integrater (perfectly smooth lines, lots of angles, complicated) Which methods were used for the vectrex and early vector games in general? I don't have a vectrex to look at, but I would guess that the first method I listed was used for the vectrex. + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!news.starnet.net!news.dra.com!news.mid.net!news.sdsmt.edu!news.wildstar.net!news.ecn.uoknor.edu!qns3.qns.net!imci4!newsfeed.internetmci.com!uwm.edu!news-res.gsl.net!news.gsl.net!portc01.blue.aol.com!newstf01.news.aol.com!newsbf02.news.aol.com!not-for-mail From: teevtee@aol.com (TEEVTEE) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: WTB: OLD STORY:2ND CONTOLLER NEEDED$$$$$ Date: 5 Jul 1996 01:06:12 -0400 Organization: America Online, Inc. Seems like there was only one D/A though, so values were "latched" into a sample and hold of some sort for the X and Y deflection amps (and a sound channel as well, I think...). Old "vector" games (like Asteroids, Tempest, etc.) used stand alone D/A's, one per channel (x/y) and often a third for Z (brightness). 8-10 bit resolution per D/A. Tempest (and color X/Y's in general) the usually added some simple binary weighted resistor networks for each of the RGB color guns (So you get a X and Y location, a brightness and an RGB color value per vector). The vector refresh circuitry had some timing correction logic that made sure that vectors of differing lengths were drawn at different rates to keep the intensity of the vectors constant. (So drawing a long vector in 1ms doesn't look dim on screen compared to drawing a short vector across the same amount of time.) -Clay Clayton N. You can probably find details of this on the ftp site (ftp.csus.edu, I think). >Any one have a spare for sale. >Could any one supply more info for part js601 the joystick controller >is it a standard component . >Any one tried to make a replacement and met with success or failure ? The joystick pot is not that common, but similar devices (I seem to recall it's either 10k or 100k, probably the former) are not too hard to find. These will not fit the vectrex case, but if you're going to be making your own controller, that's not much of a problem. I can only think of three >ways to do this: >-calculate the slope and and draw it out with a DAC > (would allow arbitrary angles but may show slightly slightly bent > digital looking lines depending on the resolution of the DAC) I can't really comment on how the vectrex works, but I have repaired some of the older vector display peripherals from the 1970's, and can explain (I hope) how they worked. The basic idea was as you described it. A pair of DACs (of about 10 bit resolution) driven by counters. To draw a diagonal line, the appropriate number of clock pulses was fed to each counter, thus moving the beam along the desired line. There are several things to consider, though. You must space the clock pulses so that the 2 counters get to their final values at about the same time. If you want to (say), move 100 dots in the X direction and 50 in the y direction, then it's no good giving 50 pulses to each counter, and then an extra 50 pulses to the X counter. If you do that, the line will look like : ______ / / / / What you need to do is feed a pulse to the X counter, then 1 to the X and Y simultaneously, etc. The line then looks like : _/ _/ _/ _/ Which is much more like what you want. There is a rather nice circuit called a 'rate multiplier' that takes in a n-bit binary number (lets call in m), and outputs m pulses for every 2^n clocks it gets. It spaces these as evenly as possible. For example, if you have an 8 bit device, and set m=2, then it gives out a pulse every 128 clock pulse. If you set m=3, then it gives out a pulse after 85,170,255, 341 (=256+85 - It _has_ to repeat after 256 pulses), etc. A couple of those make idea clock generators for the X and Y counters when fed with the number of X and Y steps to move The other problem is that you want the electon beam to spend about the same amount of time drawing each line, otherwise the brightness of different lines will be different. DEC solved this problem (in the VT11 vector display) by shifting the 2 differences until at least one of the MSBs was set. The 'normalised' differences were fed to the rate multipliers. Of course the unnormalised values were used to decide where to end the line. HP, in the HP1350 display, actually controlled the beam intensity using a DAC that was driven from the difference value (probably the larger of the 2 differences - I forget). >-multiplex among several different integraters to give different > slopes > (perfectly smooth lines, but limited angles) >-somehow use a DAC to control an integrater > (perfectly smooth lines, lots of angles, complicated) >Which methods were used for the vectrex and early vector games in >general? I don't have a vectrex to look at, but I would guess that the >first method I listed was used for the vectrex. The vectrex is somewhat strange. There is only one DAC in a vectrex, and it controls the X,Y,Z(intensity) of the beam, and is even used as an extra sound channel, e.g. for digitised speech. I forget the exact details, but I think the circuitry is a bit more complex than just sample-and-holds, and that there may well be an integrator in there... -- -tony ard12@eng.cam.ac.uk The gates in my computer are AND,OR and NOT, not Bill + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csulb.edu!BellSouth!gatech!newsfeed.internetmci.com!in2.uu.net!server-b.cs.interbusiness.it!qualcuno.nettuno.it!p.cavina From: p.cavina@mo.nettuno.it (Piero Cavina) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Battle Zone for the Vectrex? I also snagged Patriots and Vector Vaders the other day when I downloaded the emulator for a copy of the Exec ROM to disassemble. Here's some random thoughts: Either Patriots or Vaders or both accidentally used the extended addressing mode instead of the direct addressing mode at least once. This has the effect of writing to ROM instead of an I/O port. (On the 6809 the ONLY way to use direct mode is by putting a < before the address, such as in <$C9 is DP+$C9 and $C9 is $00C9). But John doesn't have to feel bad, because I've found the similar error a couple of times in GCE carts. One even loaded the DP register from extended addressing mode instead of immediate! Also, I think John used the 6502 style $C123,X (absolute address + offset in X) indexing a couple of times. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just backwards of the way indexing is usually done on the 6809. My disassembler generates source code, and does a pretty good job of it. About the only tricky trade-off was LDD immediate as an address reference is a lot less common than as a data reference, but at least one of the GCE carts used it as an address reference quite a bit. I go with the more common usage and assume that it's not an address. The multi-cart menu isn't all that hard to update when you run my kind of disassembler, which outputs source code and has all sorts of code tracing and automatic ASCII detection and hand-hinting and stuff. The output ran through the assembler as-is, and all I had to do was make the few changes for two new games. If I had written it, I probably would have designed it to be hand-patchable, but so it goes. I got Patriots and Vaders working, anyhow. Patriots and Vaders are pretty cool, but I like Patriots better. I didn't bother to look for the hidden game, but I'll figure it out when I understand how to read Vectrex code. I also noticed one of the GCE carts has a secret programmer credits screen, apparently triggered by some combination of controller 2 buttons at power-up. I've got a batch file set up to grep the disassembled code and throw all the JSR, JMP, etc. references into a file which I then clean up. Looks like they weren't very particular with entry points. Some carts even make calls into the Minestorm region of ROM ($E000-$EFFF). When I'm done, the results might be useful in writing a faster emulator. I hate how they split up the text mode character bitmaps. Why couldn't they just do a simple integer multiply with some shifts and adds or use the MUL instruction instead? It doesn't even reference the character bitmap addresses directly, referencing $0020 below the start and end. I wrote a program to dump them all into a nice convienent text file, suitable for framing. + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csulb.edu!drivel.ics.uci.edu!news.service.uci.edu!ihnp4.ucsd.edu!munnari.OZ.AU!bunyip.cc.uq.oz.au!harbinger.cc.monash.edu.au!nntp.coast.net!howland.reston.ans.net!newsfeed.internetmci.com!news.chatlink.com!news.cyberport.com!usenet From: cmoore@cyberport.com (Clay Moore) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Help anyone know the modifications for cnverting a SEGA controller. (Mostly doing PIC and 8051 code at >the moment, not 6809...) :-/ I'm familiar with the Battlezone Mathbox, and I think you'd be better off simply using the 6809's 'mul' instruction. By the time you passed off the information, and did the handshaking required to see if the co-processor was done, I'm sure you could have done the four 'mul' instructions needed for a 16x16 bit multiply. Yeah the mathbox did a little more, but not much. No way you can do this on a Sean Kelly multicart, since you need button 3 to select the image! :) I'm about a third of the way through the exec rom now, thanks to the guidance from that old disassembly. But it's pretty cheezy output, so I'm re-disassembling everything and coming up with saner label names. And it doesn't use a PIA chip, dammit, it uses a VIA chip! Fortunately I had one of those boxed "VIC Revealed" book sets lying around, and it had sufficient documentation on the VIA to figure out the hardware with the assistance of the schematics. It's wierd how they did the line patterns (such as the dashed lines in the startup screen). They hooked up the VIA chip's serial register to the blanking output and set it up in free running mode. Just set it to $FF to get a solid line, $00 to blank, or a pattern (like $E0) to draw a dashed line. + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csulb.edu!drivel.ics.uci.edu!news.claremont.edu!kaiwan.kaiwan.com!news.uoregon.edu!vixen.cso.uiuc.edu!howland.reston.ans.net!nntp.crl.com!crl9.crl.com!not-for-mail From: btomlin@crl.com (Bruce Tomlin) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Re: Mr. Boston Promotional Vectrex Cartidge Date: 12 Jul 1996 20:50:20 -0700 Organization: San Antonio, TX Lines: 13 Distribution: inet Message-ID: <4s76ds$fhr@crl9.crl.com> References: <4rjvbi$8o3@dfw-ixnews8.ix.netcom.com> Reply-To: btomlin@aol.com NNTP-Posting-Host: crl9.crl.com X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Ant Chapman (ant@achap.demon.co.uk) wrote in rec.games.vectrex: >In article <4rjvbi$8o3@dfw-ixnews8.ix.netcom.com>, Jayson & Laura Hill > spews forth : >> >>Is anyone aware of a promotion that GCE/Milton Bradley did with the >>Vectrex? The Guide features systems that games are no longer being developed for, including Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Odyssey2, Vectrex, RCA Studio II, Adventurevision, Arcadia 2001, Bally Astrocade, Channel F, Sega Master System, and Turbografx-16. Each section contains a well-written introduction and a complete list of cartridges in "checklist" format, each with manufacturer, product number, date of elease, and a "scarceOmeter" (used to determine how difficult each game is to obtain). In addition, hundreds of titles are reviewed by the editor in a capsulized "psychOphile", which are aimed more at the gamer than the collector. Several entries even have pictures to describe what words simply cannot. In addition, there are pages and pages of essays by the writers and other collectors, musing over their fond memories of these classic systems, and enthusiastically detailing "the great finds" of their lives. There are also complete sections devoted to Atari 2600 label and catalog variations, rumored game releases, a huge list of collectors and their addresses, and the whole thing is topped off by a 25-page "psychOpedia", which is something like a glossary of important people, companies, systems, and games with entertaining tidbits on each. This Guide is 50 pages larger than their last edition, which was released in 1994, weighing in at 199 pages. To order a copy, write to the address below, make checks or money orders (for $15) out to Joe Santulli (the editor). Digital Press has been producing a bi-monthly fanzine targeting the gamer/collector since August 1991. Unlike the Guide, the regular issues also include game reviews and commentary on contemporary systems such as the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn. Their team includes a dozen writers who have been hopelessly addicted to video games since birth. -- ******************************************************************* DIGITAL PRESS "THE Bio-degradable Source for Video Gamers" 44 Hunter Place, Pompton Lakes, NJ 07442 Email: DigitPress@aol.com (ask for a free sample if ya don't know us!) + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csulb.edu!BellSouth!news.mindlink.net!van-bc!n1van.istar!van.istar!west.istar!ott.istar!istar.net!newsfeed.internetmci.com!newsfeed.internetmci.com!news.kei.com!news.texas.net!nntp.primenet.com!news.goodnet.com!news.netzone.com!news.cyberport.com!usenet From: cmoore@cyberport.com (Clay Moore) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: RE Battlezone,.......EVEN Better would be GRAVITAR !! the best vector game, IMHO Date: 13 Jul 1996 13:46:57 GMT Organization: CyberPort Station Lines: 7 Distribution: inet Message-ID: <4s89ch$omu@macaw.cyberport.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: pm62-93.cyberport.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=US-ASCII X-Newsreader: WinVN 0.99.6 I am a vector fan and have an Atari Gravitar/Space Duels.Arcade Machine.. .I still think Gravitar is the best Vector game I have seen..that gets my vote. The thing I remember about the Vectrex is it seemed like there was a lot of "busy work" that the 6809 had to do all the time for keeping the D/A calibrated and servicing everything else. Do you know the speed of the 6809 in the Vectrex? I don't remember. :-/ I suppose that the worst case scenario is that the enemies don't have many points in their shapes... Hmmm. On the other hand, with a fast external processor you could bound the worst-case display list so that you'd *always* be done with all the transforms before N mSecs, to get rid of any handshaking. Reads to the RAM are just as fast as code fetches then. Maybe I'll write some simple 3-D projection code on the PC and see just how many transforms we're talking here. Yeah, I started looking at all my old 3-D stuff from school last night trying to figure out just how many multiplies per point I need to do transforms. Kind-of amusing to find out just how much of this stuff I've forgotten... :-/ > Yeah, but then you have to actually HAVE the external processor, and that > rather limits your user base. The idea here was to just pick a fast, cheap processor and build it into the cartridge (like StarFox on the Super Nintendo, for example). An 8031 w/ latch and ROM is about $4, and delivers ~1mip at 12MHz... (don't remember if the MUL instruction takes 12 or 24 oscillator periods though) So, if a transform of a 3-D point takes 9 multiplies and maybe 6 adds, we're looking at: 9 x 2 cycles = 18 cycles per point in MUL 6 x 1 cycle = 6 cycles poer point in ADD for 24 cycles (24uS at 12MHz) per point. Let's make a guess and say that there are 128 point in 3D objects on the screen (max), that's 3072 (without any other operations going on, and you know there will need to be some other code as well). 3072 * 1uS = 3.07mS. Huh. That's not too bad at all! So maybe we round up and say each "frame" of objects will take 5000 instruction cycles to complete, or 5mS. Assuming a 60Hz screen refresh rate (I imagine the Vectrex can "refresh" at any rate it likes, depending on how much drawing it needs to do), you have 16.667mS per refresh to do all your work and have your display lists ready to draw (exclusive of actual drawing time). Well, 5mS still fits nicely in that bound, so it at least *looks* possible. I still think it would be cool to do hidden line removal if there was enough CPU time! ;-) Ok, back to work... -Clay Clayton N. In fact, depending on how the hardware works, it can be even harder because you've got a bunch of linear chips in it. At least the 2600 has a single-line frame buffer, but all the Vectrex has is a bunch of op-amps and the VIA shift register. >6809 in the Vectrex? I've done a bunch of SNES code and *everything* is precomputed and stored in indexed tables 'cause ths 65816 is such a dog... :-/ I'd venture a guess that the reason we didn't see more "3D" looking games when the Vectrex came out was because of the limited ROM size. (If you have 4 different kinds of enemies built out of ~20 verticies each and you want 16 rotational positions each you're looking at... what, over 2K right there! Yipe!) I've just got it in my head that I want to build a cart with a co-processor for the Vectrex. (PCJohn beat me to the first new game, so I'm looking for another first... :-) Maybe I'll get it out of my system by building a PC->Vectrex dedicated development platform. > With 8-bit machines, everything has to be a trick, not brute force. Well, all the Lucas stuff was pretty cool (and damn spooky code) on the 8-bit. But that kind of design practice (a trick) can lead to some pretty crappy games where the entire game is based on the hack. (Take "Dimension X" for example...) >The vec can do smooth scaling and 2D rotation. > That alone makes it more suitable for 3D style games than other machines > of that vintage. You just fudge the rest of it. I'll agree and disagree there. The thing I like best about the Vectrex is the silky smooth look of the rotations and scaling, so I really wanted to avoid having to fake the 3D if I could. (Look at StarFox on the SNES-- very cool and very much an "upgrade" to the system with just a cartridge!) This is all sorta moot, seeing as how I don't even have a game planned to take advantage of it-- I guess I can think it over a bit more. :-) My natural inclination is to just clone the BattleZone sitting in my garage which is how I jumped in on this thread anyway. I am talking about money around $10,000-20,000 depending on how much time you put in to it. Print this article out now! JUST TRY THIS--ALL YOU HAVE TO LOSE IS ABOUT $8!!!!! All you have to do is give this a try and judge for yourself. You will definitely be satisfied with the conclusion you will reach. Here's the program. 1. Mail $1 to each of the five names you see on the list at the end of the letter. 2. Send a note on a piece of paper saying "Please add me to your list" Remember to wrap the paper around the bill, so postal workers won't steal it. Also mention what slot or number the person was in when you mailed them $1. For example, if John Doe was in slot #1, you would write, "John, you were in slot #1". 3. Move the names on the list up one increment. This means the number #1 person will no longer be on the list and everyone will move "up" one number. PLACE YOUR NAME IN SLOT #5 RIGHT NOW!! 4. Take this letter with your name added to the list and post it in as many newsgroups and BBS as you can. Re-post the letter after a week has passed to as many newsgroups as you can. Re-post as many times as you like in the initial three weeks. THE MORE THE BETTER. The more newsgroups you post this to means the more money you will make. You want to expose this to as many people as possible. 5. Post a catchy subject line in each newsgroup to attract people to reading your letter. 6. Just sit back and relax. If you have followed the instructions and posted to enough groups, you are going to have a new car or whatever else you want to buy in less than two months. There will be money coming in slowly until the third week when you will get a FLOOD of letters with $1 in them! If you're like me, you'll have a stack of one's over ten feet high. You'll be laughing all the way to the bank with your newly acquired 10,000 one dollar bills. 7. The last thing to remember is to save the pieces of paper you received from people with the $1 in it to be legal and avoid hassles with the IRS. 8. This business is totally legal under title 18, Section 1302 and 1341 of the U.S. Postal Lottery Laws. 9. Make sure to remain honest at all times and to keep the integrity of the list intact. They are located under the sticker that marks the buttons. The best method of getting into controller without completely destroying the label is to feel very carefully about 1/4" from the top and bottom of the sticker to locate the indentations that clue you in to where the screws are. Use an x-acto knife to carefully cut holes in the sticker and remove the screws. This really should be added to the FAQ :-) I am told that a Sega controller can be modified to work with the vectrex, but as the joystick is digital (as opposed to the Vectrex's analogue joystick), playing some games is difficult-to-impossible. I have modified Tandy CoCo (or Tandy 1000) joysticks to work with the vectrex, and also designed interfaces to use unmodified CoCo joysticks or IBM-PC type joysticks with the Vectrex. These joysticks are analogue, but as they only have 2 buttons, I put a couple of buttons on the interface box itself. This is slightly less convenient to play than the 4 button Vectrex joystick. I am told that there are some 4-button PC joysticks available. I assume that these use button inputs for the second joystick on a PC games port, and I wired my interface accordingly. I'm not certain that's right, though. The CoCo joystick conversion and interface instructions are on the Vectrex ftp site. The IBM PC one is not, for some odd reason, despite having submitted it twice :-(. If you want a copy of the latter, just ask me - it's free for non-commercial use. >Thanks! >- Dan -- -tony ard12@eng.cam.ac.uk The gates in my computer are AND,OR and NOT, not Bill + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!newsfeeder.sdsu.edu!nntp04.primenet.com!news.shkoo.com!nntp.primenet.com!news.cais.net!hunter.premier.net!news-res.gsl.net!news.gsl.net!nntp.coast.net!news.sprintlink.net!news-stk-200.sprintlink.net!news.sprintlink.net!news-stk-11.sprintlink.net!jjcd-newsserver!news From: Mark DeRoller Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: WTB: Vectrex Games Date: Wed, 31 Jul 1996 11:57:52 -0400 Organization: Johnson & Johnson Clinical Diagnostics Lines: 15 Distribution: world Message-ID: <31FF8280.41C67EA6@cldx.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: loislane.cldx.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0b5aGold (X11; I; SunOS 4.1.3_U1 sun4c) CC: mderolle@cldx.com Hello all, I'm looking for any Vectrex games to buy except Star Trek.
