They are also rare enough that real arcade game collectors (like myself, though I don't collect XY games yet) snap them up as soon as they are available, and I'm pretty sure that convincing someone who's spent a bundle replacing parts or maintaining them to rip it out of a working color Atari XY games to give it to a vectrex hacker. Programming a color game almost seems trivial compared to getting a good color XR monitor. I just got a Tempest, but the Monitor seem to be buggy. It doesn't work on power on eventually, instead the Monitor stays black and there's a gentle klick sound every second or so near the tube or it's pcb. Sometimes there's a horizontal line flashing with every click in the middle of the screen. After half an hour running then often things get ok and all works fine. Does anyone have the schematics? If yes, please could you send them to me? (per email, if you are able to scan them, or perhaps by fax (I am willing to pay the phone costs somehow of course)). I would be happy too for ideas, what the problem could be:-) One of the two 4700uF capacitors has a spot, as if it got too hot. Above is mentioned, that some of these still existing monitors need their capacitors replaced. I wonder, if this would work for me. I already bought them, but didn't do the replace by now. I would be very grateful for any help, Greets, Achim Sega Color XY monitors are even harder to come across, and if you were to use one, you;d want to make sure you had a fire extinguisher handy. + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!newshub.csu.net!news.Cerritos.edu!news.Arizona.EDU!CS.Arizona.EDU!noao!ennfs.eas.asu.edu!gatech!newsfeed.internetmci.com!howland.reston.ans.net!vixen.cso.uiuc.edu!milo.mcs.anl.gov!hera!hoffberg From: hoffberg@hera.aps.anl.gov (Mike Hoffberg) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: New Vectrex (Re: Color Vectrex Ideas...please reply) Date: 1 Apr 1996 15:13:53 GMT Organization: Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago Illinois Lines: 35 Distribution: inet Message-ID: <4jorrh$p1c@milo.mcs.anl.gov> References: <4jml6g$66a@nic.umass.edu> <4jmulr$4ur@newsbf02.news.aol.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: hera.aps.anl.gov What about an entirely new Vectrex (Vectrex ][)? Everyone knows that it is not worth it to upgrade old hardware. For what would amount to the same cost, we could design and build new hardware. I imagine a machine that would be backward compatible to the old Vectrex, but would also have color capability, a sound blaster, a new co-processor (like a some 680x0 or an x86), more RAM, expansion, and maybe even networking for multiplayer games. It would be some box with all of the original games built in, as well as a cartridge slot for new games. The monitor it would drive would be some sort of vector tube or a color vector tube. The schematics for the vectrex are in the service manual, and a (legal) scanned copy of this is available from the ftp site, ftp.csus.edu in /pub/vectrex. The diagrams are not all that clear, but the one of the digital board (which is where the DAC is, etc) is useable, particularly if you have a vectrex to check against. I ought to warn you that tapping of the brightness (Z modulation) information is not as easy as you might think. The vectrex uses only one DAC for _everything_ - both axes, Z, sound, and reading the joystick. The rough idea (from memory) is : The output of the DAC goes to a 4052 analogue mux, the outputs of which go to op-amps configured as integrators/sample-and-hold circuits. That provideds the 2 deflection signals, the Z modulation, and the DAC sound channel - the latter is mixed with the output from the AY-3-8912. The output of the DAC also goes to one input of an analogue comparator, the other output of which goes to the common pin of the other half of the 4052. The inputs of that section come from the joystick pots. The output of the comparator goes to an input port somewhere, so that the software can determine if the joystick position is greater or less than the DAC value. You may be able to latch the 8 bit data going into the DAC, using the select and enable lines of hte 4052 to generate the latch strobe, but it may not be trivial. >Just thought I'd let you know :*) >Aaron Howald "The color vector fool"! -- -tony ard12@eng.cam.ac.uk The gates in my computer are AND,OR and NOT, not Bill + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!news.ucdavis.edu!library.ucla.edu!info.ucla.edu!CTCnet!news.math.psu.edu!psuvax1!news.cc.swarthmore.edu!netnews.upenn.edu!dsinc!newsfeed.pitt.edu!gatech!newsfeed.internetmci.com!in2.uu.net!news.interpath.net!jav From: jav@mercury.interpath.com (Joe Venturelli) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Re: Vetrex emulator questions? Somebody was going to develop a colour decoder for the Vectrex. Well back in the 80's a company called Textronics (I beleive) a big graphic workstation manufacturer, developed a screen overlay for B&W monitors that gave them colour. How this worked, was that colour T.V. signals had the colour encoded on the B&W signal, the overlay would dettect this modulation and change the light to colour. A simple colour modulation board and this overlay (on a bulk Vectrex user order) could solve the problem cheaply. The possibility being that one of these portable programmable organisers or Graphic Calculators (I hear people are using for games) might have a 6809 processor and be able to run Vectrex games. Far fetched, but if the exec rom is used to interface between the hardware and software then perfectly possible, maybe requiring only realiment of the Jump and subroutine calls (through translator) for new machine. I also plan to buy Vector Vaders as soon as I know I have $20.00 free to spend that isn't going toward some other bill. Anyway, I do have a point to this message, a question for all of you other Vectrex owners. I have been noticing on my vectrex screen that on some games, the vectors wave around just a little bit, like the image were unstable or something...and also that sometimes the vector ends don't touch exactly, like in the football game, the yard lines overlap a bit... like this / - /------- / / / / / ( I know, it is tough to simulate it with text, and it is definately exaggerated in that diagram...) and other vectors don't touch at all...I'm wondering if this is a limitation of the cathode tube monitor, since the vectors sometimes change position as they fade...or maybe it just happens as the gun in the tube gets old. You will find much help from Gregg Woodcock's X/Y monitor faq, found on wiretap.spies.com FTP. It sounds to me that your Q706 transistor is failing, and you possibly need caps in your HV unit. The 4700uf caps on your deflection board are your power supply filters, probably rated at 35v. Replace them with AT LEAST 4700 uf at 50v, higher voltage than 50v if you can find them. Good luck, and don't be too intimidated. Color X/Y stuff is very intimidating at first, but once you get some confidence and knowledge in them, you will do fine. A posting to the rec.games.video.arcade.collecting newsgroup should get you copies of all needed manuals & schematics for a small price. Be sure to mention the board numbers that you have - Ex. deflection board #P314 80......., HV board #..... . There are many variations that differ slightly in the boards, and it helps to have the correct documentation for your boards. A company called Zanen Electronics makes excellent kits for repairing and "fixing up" arcade montitors. The kits contain replacement capacitors, transistors, resistors, etc.. They can make and old and "tired" monitor look brand new again. I have seen several posts from Vectrex owners saying that their Vectrex monitors are "crawling", "breathing", or "have the shakes", or are losing brightness & clarity. Well, I would like to see if anybody would be interested in buying a Zanen monitor kit (for aprox. $14.95) to rejuvinate your Vectrex monitor. THESE ARE NOT AVAILABLE YET. What I am trying to do is show that there is a good demand for a Vectrex monitor kit, and if I prove this with your postings to this newsgroup, I think one will be made available. SO, if you feel that this Vectrex monitor kit is something that you would buy, please respond and post to this newsgroup. This will also help in getting an idea of how many kits will have to be put together. Hopefully we can convince a great company like Zanen Electronics (are you listening Arbury?) that there is a market for such a kit. I have to second Gregg's motion on NOT avoiding Zanen. If we publish a list, your price for the items (as not bought in quantity) will probably push the kit price to the $30-$35 range. This would not be bad, and a kit would still be worth $35 if it would be the only way to get one. However, Zanen's prices and service are virtually unbeatable, and if Arbury can get the price of a kit below $20, (I'm thinking more in the $15 range) this would be the way to go. OK, here's my $0.02 IMHO it's a bad idea to just replace R's and C's on the vectrex boards unless you have reason to believe that they are defective. You may easily introduce other faults - and if you replace any components arround the 555 timer in the EHT generator, you _must_ go through the EHT setup procedure in the service manual - if you don't you could cook the EHT generator transistor or (worse) the EHT (flyback) transformer. But replacing the electrolytics in an aging vectrex may not be a bad idea. But tread carefully round the LM379S chip (the dual 6W audio amplifier used to drive the yoke). That chip is next-to-impossible to get any more. Finally, please post the list, even if you do get a Zanen kit made up. Not to do so would be against the spirit of the vectrex IMHO, and while the kit may be good value to most Stateside vectrex owners, I would not be very happy if I had to order a kit from the states that contained components that I had in stock anyway. There's nothing even remotely hard to find amongst the R's and C's in the vectrex. >Thanks, >Michael Kelley -- -tony ard12@eng.cam.ac.uk The gates in my computer are AND,OR and NOT, not Bill + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csusac!zimmer.CSUFresno.EDU!newshub.csu.net!news.Cerritos.edu!news.Arizona.EDU!math.arizona.edu!noao!ennfs.eas.asu.edu!gatech!newsfeed.internetmci.com!in2.uu.net!inquo!nntp.uio.no!ifi.uio.no!news.sics.se!eua.ericsson.se!cnn.exu.ericsson.se!cnn.exu.ericsson.se!netnews From: exuadam@cnn.exu.ericsson.se (Adam Roach) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Re: Emulator Date: 16 Apr 1996 09:21:58 -0500 Organization: little piles, all around my room Lines: 12 Distribution: inet Message-ID: <4l0ae6$678@b04a24.exu.ericsson.se> References: <4kv246$e1@head.globalcom.net> NNTP-Posting-Host: b04a24.exu.ericsson.se In article <4kv246$e1@head.globalcom.net>, <> wrote: >Does anyone know if there is a Vectrex emulator for the PC? The one of two controller ports don't work, what does this sound like? I left it with a freind who will try and fix it up. I showed another feind the origional unit using the controllers I got with the other unit. I noticed my mine storm game has developed a fault now, the ship laying the mines, it's two ruts on the under belly, the lines are straying in different directions (not forming a rectangular grove any more, the explosions don't enimate from the same piont any more, and the screen wobbles a bit when using the controller. In clean sweep also when I push up or down the left side of the screen moves, shrinks or something, looking like some short is developing. Can somebody advise me? Thanks. The most likely (as in highly stressed) semiconductors to fail are the EHT generator transistor (BU407?) and the deflection amplifier (LM379S). The latter is almost impossible to obtain - I use them for fixing hard drives in PERQ workstations, and nobody lists them any more, and if you replace the former, you should go through the setup procedure in the service manual, or you might be _reducing_ reliability. That procedure needs a 'scope, BTW. I've been quotes $150 for a replacement LM379S by an obsolete semiconductor supplier over here, and they were not sure they could get them. >in the general population. There is no reason to avoid Zanen because >he beats the "shelf" price by a wide margin and in most cases throws IMHO A non-US vectrex owner with a well-stocked junk box (like myself) wouldn't have to buy the kit - I probably have 90%+ of the parts in stock at the moment. The hassle of shipping the kit, paying import duty and VAT (sales tax) would also count against buying it. If the kit is the good value you suggest (and I have no reason to doubt it), then there's no reason not to post a list of the contents. To the rest of you, however, why would it be such a problem? Are you trying to tell me that the Vectrex can pull off the detailed three dimensional graphics and complex gameplay of "Dark Tower" but can't handle a measly one-on-one fighting game? And you call yourself fans of the system... Really, 16K is plenty of memory for a game like "Mortal Kombat". Sure, the characters would have to be stick figures, but there's no reason most of the game's other elements couldn't be included. Fatalities? Punch a guy and he shatters into his component lines- how much cooler can you get than that? Voice? "Spike" had it. Multiple attacks? Finally, those four buttons on the Vectrex controller could be put to good use. Scaling and rotation a'la "Killer Instinct"? That's built into the Vectrex hardware, so why not? I've owned a Vectrex and one of Sean Kelly's multi-carts, so I know what the machine's capable of... and a fighting game is NOT beyond the scope of the Vectrex. And so SF2's been overdone... BFD. If you want overinundation, take a look at all those "Asteroids" knock-offs on the system. "Space Wars", "Rip-Off", "Star Castle", "Cosmic Chasm", TWO versions of "Minestorm"... now THAT'S what I call wearing a concept thin! All I'm saying is that the system could handle a one-on-one fighting game like "Street Fighter 2", and that the game (in the right programmer's hands) would be very much worth playing. I'm also doing a little more beta-testing to make sure I've gotten all the bugs out. I also have an additional 400 so bytes of memory left over so I'm considering adding some extra treat or something. Here are a few bits of info: #1 Plays like a "fast" missile command. #2 Minimal flicker thru-out game. It only flickers during the high levels when you have tons of explosions and missiles on screen. Definitely 200% improvement over Vector Vaders. #3 Lots more sounds and effects than Vector Vaders. #4 Plenty of fades, scaling and rotation special effects. #5 CHALLENGING ! Certainly more randomness than Vector Vaders. #6 SECRET BONUS GAME completely unrelated to the main game is hidden within Patriots. I'm considering a contest to see who can find it first. #7 Full color box cover. If you get any game for your Vectrex, this will have to be it. "STAR TREK" is okay but lacks the true 3D >illusion created in "TAILGUNNER". This is one of the two classic games that come to my mind as being PERFECT for Vectrex ports! The other one is Battlezone. The built-in scaling hardware should make it easy to do the approaching ships in Tailgunner and approaching tanks/obstacles/cannon shots (Yikes!) in Battlezone. The sound chip should easily be able to handle the constant background hum in both games at the same time as the firing/explosion effects (and it should help mask the constant background hum put out by many Vectrexes). The joystick + two buttons (fire & shield) is all you need for the Tailgunner controls, though the Battlezone controls wouldn't be quite as accurate. You'd have to replace the two forward/back levers with just the joystick in seven positions (left, center, right at front and back, plus centered), BUT you could include a variant game where it allows you to do full sideways movement, a la Assault! Or you could have the full-left and full-right positions be the "spin in place" maneuvering you got when you pulled one lever back and pushed the other forward. -- _______ ______/ , -= Lunatic Johnathan Bruce E'Sex (: _____/ / _ ___ _ @netcom.com ____/ //__ (_| |\| /-\ | ][ {_ @genie.com + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Path: csus.edu!csulb.edu!drivel.ics.uci.edu!news.service.uci.edu!unogate!mvb.saic.com!eskimo!news From: Philemon Vanderbeck Subject: Re: "When I say I want NEW Vectrex games..." revisited X-Nntp-Posting-Host: tia1.eskimo.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Message-ID: <317CFE51.5B7E@eskimo.com> Sender: news@eskimo.com (News User Id) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Organization: Eskimo North (206) For-Ever References: <4l66i3$7sa@news.gvsu.edu> <4la09v$2vb@hole.sdsu.edu> Mime-Version: 1.0 Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 15:59:13 GMT X-Mailer: Mozilla 2.01 (Macintosh; I; 68K) Lines: 10 lee wrote: > Space Wars was the VERY first video game ever made (1960's) and was first > marketed in 1977 (Cinematronics and Vectorbeam)....a full 2 yrs before > Asteroids. It was done in raster graphics and the console was a cool fiberglass "futuristic" design that came in various colors. Excellent! I'd check out your site to read the reviews you've no doubt posted, but this Pentium absolutely refuses to load it up (you didn't put complex fractions in the HTML, did you? Heh, heh, heh...). I'll have to hop over to the only Power Mac on campus to check it out. On the topic of "Dark Tower" maps, you don't need one. The layout's the same as the board game upon which it was based... the playfield is split into four quadrants (trees, dead trees, pines, and a mix of both, I believe, although it's been a while since I've played it), and the Tower is smack dab in the center where the four quadrants meet. I'm tempted to believe that the positioning of treasure chests, gold bags, and keys is random, but I have no scientific evidence to back that theory up... does anyone know for sure? Well, anyways, the best advice I can give you is to wade through the game on Level 4 (which gives you all the keys but one), find the divider between two quadrants once you've found the last key, and follow it up to the tower where... well, you have a copy of "Concept" so you'll know what to do from there. You forgot Solar Quest. Heck, as long as you're lumping in all games with a small ship/vehicle that moves around the screen and shoots at things as "Asteroids clones" you might as well add in Armor..Attack, as well. It's about as close to a clone of Asteroids as Cosmic Chasm is. Yeah, a one-on-one fighting game is most likely possible on the Vectrex. Consider a few things, though: o The major reasons people BOUGHT Vectrex systems are because they liked the old classic vector graphic games (none of which included a one-on-one fighting game), and because they like the games that are already out for the Vectrex. o A one-on-one fighting game would take much more effort to develop than a game that resembles one of the early video games, like Space Invaders, Missile Command, Battlezone (Hope! Hope!), Tailgunner (a fav. choice of mine for a port), etc. How much return are any of these actually going to make? Almost certainly not enough to justify spending the time and effort to stretch the Vectrex's abilities to where you'd get a really nice fighting game that's worth that effort. o If someone wants a lot of one-on-one fighting games, they'll most likely buy a Super Nintendo or Genesis. So if you want to see a one-on-one fighting game for the Vectrex, go ahead and develop it yourself. Just don't expect everyone else who owns a Vectrex to be as excited by the concept as they are by the thought of some truly classic games being ported. In fact, considering that in the time it would take to develop a really GOOD one-on-one fighting game on the Vectrex, two or three classic game ports could be done, don't be surprised if people are even openly hostile to the idea. -- _______ ______/ , -= Lunatic Johnathan Bruce E'Sex (: _____/ / _ ___ _ @netcom.com ____/ //__ (_| |\| /-\ | ][ {_ @genie.com + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csulb.edu!drivel.ics.uci.edu!news.claremont.edu!nntp-server.caltech.edu!nntp1.jpl.nasa.gov!news.magicnet.net!pm6-19.magicnet.net!user From: hamster@magicnet.net (Scottie Prince) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Re: How 'bout TAILGUNNER for the Vectrex! Patriots made its first "official" public appearance at the quarterly collectors meeting at Video Game Connections in Howell, NJ on April 21st, 1996. I'd like to publicly thank all those who attended, the compliments I received on this new game were really great. I'm glad everyone thinks the game is as good as I think it is. Pictures and information from the meeting will be on my web page shortly. More on that later. Patriots is a "Missile Command" clone. Patriots is faster and more challenging than other missile games. It is visually exciting, with many special effects, including fades, scaling and rotation. Sound effects are my best yet. Game control is solid with additional options for those who need them. Patriots is superior to Vector Vaders in many ways. For starters, the code is much more optimized (and I still don't have a 6809 book) making the game run very, very smooth. Vectrex "flicker" is practically nonexistent, except for higher levels with tons of missiles, patriots and explosions all happening at once. By the way, did I mention that Patriots contains a "SECRET" bonus game ? You can obtain Patriots on the Sean Kelly multicart, however true collectors will more than likely want to purchase the complete game from me. Here is what you get in the Patriots package: - Sturdy, SHRINKWRAPPED box - Full color box cover (VERY IMPRESSIVE TITLE PICTURE) - Complete instructions - A Patriots mini-cart, numbered and autographed by the author (me) - The Patriots game is also customized, so that when you start the game, you will have your cartridge number displayed on the title screen. It gets even better - Your name is also included in the program so the title screen will display the following message: "CUSTOM PRODUCED FOR your name here". HOW TO ORDER: ------------- The price of Patriots is twenty US dollars ($20.00). Shipping is included within the continental USA. Outside the USA will cost a bit more for shipping (About $3.00 Canada, $5.00 overseas). Due to the fact that I cannot produce these ahead of time, as I did with Vector Vaders, there will be a longer turn around time. Right now I would say 4 to 7 days from receipt of payment. You can obtain more information by contacting me via E-Mail at pcjohn@crisp.net For screen shots and a picture of the box, check out my web page at http://www.crisp.net/home/pcjohn/index.html I should also have some reviews and pictures from the meeting posted here shortly. How would it work? I concur; there is such a thing. While I don't have one, I was fortunate enough to get to borrow one for an extended period of time. It looks similar to a Marks-A-Lot marking pen and has a phototransistor in the tip that provides a pulse to the Vectrex thru the controller #2 input. The original circuit uses, as I recall, four transistors including a phototransistor to shape the signal. (really, honest, I WILL post the schematic some day...). For those that want to experiment, Tony Duell posted a working schematic that is available in the archives (ftp://ftp.csus.edu/pub/vectrex/lightpen.txt). It uses a photodarlington, a common NPN transistor, and a 74LS132 gate. As far as cables, I've found a LIMITED source of SEGA extension cables that can be used to either extend the controller, or chop off one end and use to build your own light pen or goggles. I picked up a few to play with building some light pens with. Are these cables pretty common, or have they become hard to come by (they cost me a couple bucks each; the downside is that if anyone wanted some, packaging and postage within the US would probably double the expense). -- John John F. Okay, okay, look: if we want to define the first video game as the first game to be commercially released in some way, that's Computer Space. If we want to define it as the first game-like computer program, well, I think there was a Pong-like tennis game that preceeds Space War, and that would be it. I'm using "Phoenix: the Rise & Fall of Home Video Games" as my source here. Sound right?
