Checking motherboard chips, logic probes... Sounds a bit overkill to me... How about buy one of those cartridge cleaner kits and cartridge slot cleaner kits. You might have to cut the gizmo to size, as I'm not sure which systems have a similar size card-edge. I had a similar problem, and it turned out that it was a combination of VERY dirty contacts and slightly bent contacts in the slot (the contacts had lost there sprininess). I couldn't find an easy way to get the slot contacts to be more springy, but I found that lots of cleaning of both the carts and slot as well as careful placement of the cartridges fixed the problem. Then lock it down tight again. Are you sure about this? It's not mentioned in the service manual, and normally the yoke position does not affect the focus on a monochrome CRT. Most modern (as in after mid 70's) mono CRTs were designed so that the focus would be OK if all the electrode voltages were within certain (quite wide) limits. There is no focus control as such in the vectrex. The thing I would do first is to go through the EHT setup procedure in the service manual (pages 15 and 16). You need an EHT voltmeter (you have to measure the 5.8kV final anode voltage), and a 'scope, but I suspect that the EHT is incorrect if the focus is way out. Incidentally, incorrect setting of the 'ringing' control (R525) can damage the EHT generator transistor (Q502, BU407) and the flyback transformer (which is hell to get). So don't fiddle unless : a) You have read the service manual and understand it b) You know the proper safety procedures to use when working on EHT systems c) You have the necessary equipment. I suspect any TV repairman (A proper one, not a board-swapper) could perform this test for you. You might want to check that the CRT base connector is making good contact on all pins - if pin 6 or 7 open-circuits then focus will suffer. Of course it could also be a defective CRT, defective components in the 1st anode supply, or even noise in the deflection system (not strictly a focus problem, but the screen will not be sharp) > THANX...Gregg day 214.684.7380 night UNLIST/PUBL TEXAS NOT CANADA! -tony + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!news.ucdavis.edu!library.ucla.edu!newsfeed.internetmci.com!btnet!dispatch.news.demon.net!demon!mail2news.demon.co.uk!p850ug1.demon.co.uk From: Tony Duell Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Re: Vectrex problem Date: Sun, 05 Nov 95 01:04:17 GMT Organization: P850 User Group Lines: 35 Distribution: inet Message-ID: <815533457snz@p850ug1.demon.co.uk> References: <47ap09$mbr@main.freenet.hamilton.on.ca> <47d9mc$ouv@kannews.ca.newbridge.com> Reply-To: ard@p850ug1.demon.co.uk X-NNTP-Posting-Host: p850ug1.demon.co.uk X-Newsreader: Demon Internet Simple News v1.29 In article <47d9mc$ouv@kannews.ca.newbridge.com> woodward@Newbridge.COM "Mark Woodward" writes: > It doesn't use one pin to detect the cart it looks for the 'CGE' header > at 0000h. We all know about the "Wave 13" bug that crashes your Vectrex. Well before they resolved it by including a notice that said "after wave 13 don't push any buttons or your game will crash" in all the base units, they resolved the issue by mailing out a fixed version of the Minestorm game with the bug patched out in a cart labeled "Minestorm II". (2 systems, 2 controllers, 18 carts) No, I'm not Tony, but apparently the previous owner of some of these games was. Some of the boxes have the name "Tony" on them in pen. In blank pages at the back of the instruction manuals where you're supposed to write down your high scores, Tony has done so (in most cases, only once or twice). Everything is used but looks good & works well(except as noted). RULES: 1) Items will be sold on a "going once, going twice, SOLD" basis with 48 hours inactivity for "going once" and "going twice" and 72 hours for "sold". 2) I'll post infrequently to the group, but if you bid, you get Email updates. 3) Buyer pays shipping. 4) Please be reasonable with bidding increments. SYMBOLS: B=Box O=Overlay I=Instructions N=Name (on box) S=writing in "Scores" section of instruction manual. Nicer Vectrex: Comes in (battered) original box, game system with one controller, Minestorm instructions and overlay, "Passport" game catalog (not the magazine, just a brochure), owner's manual, accessory order sheet, a note mentioning that the company had moved and has a new address, and even the little silica gel packet to keep things nice and dry. $60 Minimum Cheaper Vectrex: System with one controller. Everything works fine, but the knobs are missing from the reset button and the volume control. Minestorm overlay included. $40 Minimum Spare controller 1: Works perfectly, but the screw-on knob is missing from the joystick tip and the shaft of the joystick is a little bent. $10 minimum Spare controller 2: Looks & feels normal. It auto-centers and the springs are fine, but it reads that it's pointing a little to the left. Left untouched, the Vectrex will think you're pushing it left. Push it a smidge to the right and it thinks it's centered, push it farther right and it goes right. Just an adjustment to fix, perhaps? I'm afraid to take it apart & find out. $8 minimum Games: Boxes are all in good shape. Most have original price tags. End flaps may be a bit dog-eared from use, but boxes are not crushed/ water damaged/skewered or whatever. AN "N" INDICATES THAT TONY HAS WRITTEN HIS NAME ON THE CORNER OF THE BOX, AN "S" INDICATES MARKS IN THE HIGH SCORES SECTION OF THE INSTRUCTIONS. M-Network part number 4609. Yes folks, through special purchase, (I got lucky and bought some old- new stock, including this item), I make available to the collecting public, this sealed, extremely rare, gem. Think about it... You see joysticks, paddles, keypad controllers, kid controllers, track balls, even Supercharges and tapes. Why, if you've got the $$ to burn, you can even get yourself a CtCW cart. But when was the last time you saw -or heard about- a TRON joystick... let alone one that is SEALED IN THE BOX. THE DETAILS: Yes, the item is sealed in its original box. The price sticker on the box indicates it was to be sold for $57.95. The box is in shop-worn condition. This means edges and corners have suffered a small amount of wear. The cellophane window, while still firmly in place, has let loose from the cardboard in a couple of places. And the cardboard is no longer perfectly straight in all places. While $$$ will always be considered, I would prefer to help round out my collection of Atari carts, unless of course, the $$$ amount is just too obscene to pass up. So if you are interested in this item, please send in your offers. Over approximately a two week period, I will accept your offers. I reserve the right to take the auction private after that point, during which time no new bidders will be allowed in, but all existing bidders will have final chances to better their bids in a once-twice-gone format. Bids should consist of good to excellent quality Atari carts. Do not offer damaged goods (missing/torn labels, screw holes, damaged cases, etc). Normal wear and some Acti-plague (tm) are permissible, but should be noted. Instructions are of course preferred, but not required. My cartridge want list is available on request. Colecovision carts can also be added to sweeten the deal, as Santa is supposedly bringing me one of these systems this year. Intellivision is acceptable, but is a VERY LOW priority. I went to see a friend at his college and his housemate was playing Vectrex, which normally wouldn't be TOO exciting except that she was playing it on a special Vectrex display stand! The stand is silver and black, reading Vectrex down the sides and has a glass door in front which opens to shelves loaded with cartridges and stuff! The stand has a place for the unit and a groove for the controller with Minestorm instructions on a panel right above the controller. I proceeded to pick my jaw off the floor and upon further investigation found that EVERYTHING was there! Light pen, 3-D, ALL the games with original boxes and original everything. She said her mom got it for free when the company bit the big one. She had no idea how much it was worth she just thought it was some silly old game system (which it really is, but...). I told her my best guess at a value, she then proceeded to pick her jaw off the floor. (2 systems, 2 controllers, 18 carts, and an Atari Video Music unit) No, I'm not Tony, but apparently the previous owner of some of these games was. Date of last bid listed after bidder's name. $45 Ghunter going once 11/10 Spare controller 1: Works perfectly, but the screw-on knob is missing from the joystick tip and the shaft of the joystick is a little bent. $12 Mercury 11/12 Spare controller 2: Looks & feels normal. It auto-centers and the springs are fine, but it reads that it's pointing a little to the left. Left untouched, the Vectrex will think you're pushing it left. A true collector's item in pristine mint condition! Make me an offer I can't refuse. Here's what you get: Vectrex 3D Imager Everything is here in brand spanking NEW condition. The unit itself is in mint condition. Does it work? Of course it works! Perfectly! And it looks absolutely beautiful. Even the foam forehead pad is still soft and supple. It includes the "3D Minestorm" cartridge and color wheel (in it's own mint envelope). And the instruction manual. Even the little insert showing how to install the color wheel latch is still there. It's complete with original styrofoam packing and box, just like it came from the warehouse. Actually the box is in better condition than boxes originally on the store shelves. Not a mark or crease on it! But wait, there's more! Also included is "3D Narrow Escape". There's no box for this one, sorry to say. But you get the cartridge, color wheel (in the envelope), and instruction pamphlet. All in absolutely new shape! But wait, there's STILL more! Also included is "3D Crazy Coaster". Complete with everything in the original box, just as originally purchased at Sears. It even still has the original Sears price sticker on it. The box is slightly bent in the back, but other than that there are no flaws. The plastic holder is intact. Comes with a new looking cartridge, color wheel in it's own envelope, instruction pamphlet and the rare separate addendum warning you about accidentally being thrown out of the roller coaster. Except for the slight damage to the box, this is also in mint condition. I bought all of these at Sears and Toys R Us when they were new, and used them only once. Because of an eye problem, I had trouble viewing the 3D effect. So they were stored away and never were used again. They are just as originally purchased! You'll never find these in better condition. They are gorgeous!!! Make me an offer on the entire package. I will not split it up, so please don't ask. No trades; cash only. This is a very rare item, so don't expect to get it cheaply. I'll take the best offer received by November 27. Please include shipping charges in your offers. E-mail me your offer: jrolsen@teleport.com Give yourself a nice Christmas present. So, Either Carefully peel off the overlay from the controller, and set it aside. You can stick it back on afterwards. Or Feel for the 5 screwheads through the overlay, and then make holes to reach them. Although this means the controller no longer looks original, it does make subsequent repairs easier. Remove the 5 screws. Separate the 2 halves of the controller case. The electronics remains in the top part. The PCB can be removed by undoing the screw the goes through it. Under it you'll find the rubber-dome switch assembly and the 4 buttons. The joystick mechanism is held down by 4 screws. When re-inserting the self-tapping screws, place them in the hole, turn backwards (counter-clockwise) until the threads engage, and then tighten them. That reduces the risk of stripping the holes in the plastic. The 2 presets on the PCB are centring controls. You can adjust them using the test cartridge, or with your favourite game until the joystick is correctly centred. -- -tony ard12@eng.cam.ac.uk The gates in my computer are AND,OR and NOT, not Bill + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csulb.edu!info.ucla.edu!newsfeed.internetmci.com!swrinde!cs.utexas.edu!math.ohio-state.edu!news.cyberstore.ca!van-bc!news.rmii.com!newsjunkie.ans.net!newstf01.news.aol.com!newsbf02.news.aol.com!not-for-mail From: osiinc@aol.com (OSI Inc) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: Vectrex Systems and stuff for Sale Date: 17 Nov 1995 08:27:45 -0500 Organization: America Online, Inc. As someone mentioned, the cheaper vectrex currently costs $20 more than the high bid on one of the controllers! It's the "Tony" Vectrex auction daily update! (2 systems, 2 controllers, 18 carts, and an Atari Video Music unit) No, I'm not Tony, but apparently the previous owner of some of these games was. Some of the boxes have the name "Tony" on them in pen. In blank pages at the back of the instruction manuals where you're supposed to write down your high scores, Tony has done so (in most cases, only once or twice). Everything is used but looks good & works well(except as noted). $90 SUF 11/21 Cheaper Vectrex: System with one controller. Everything works fine, but the knobs are missing from the reset button and the volume control. Minestorm overlay included. $55 greg 11/17 going twice! Spare controller 1: Works perfectly, but the screw-on knob is missing from the joystick tip and the shaft of the joystick is a little bent. $20 PaulWitek 11/16 going twice! Spare controller 2: Looks & feels normal. $35 Paul Witek 11/18 going once! Games: Boxes are all in good shape. Most have original price tags. End flaps may be a bit dog-eared from use, but boxes are not crushed/ water damaged/skewered or whatever. $90 SUF 11/21 going once Cheaper Vectrex: System with one controller. Everything works fine, but the knobs are missing from the reset button and the volume control. Minestorm overlay included. $65 greg 11/23 Spare controller 1: Works perfectly, but the screw-on knob is missing from the joystick tip and the shaft of the joystick is a little bent. $30 weitek 11/23 Spare controller 2: Looks & feels normal. $45 weitek 11/23 Games: Boxes are all in good shape. Most have original price tags. End flaps may be a bit dog-eared from use, but boxes are not crushed/ water damaged/skewered or whatever. The best offer for the 3D Imager Package so far is $505 from JBlanchard. If there are no other offers by Monday evening, it goes to him. Thanks for your interest. For those who missed the original post, a copy follows: ====================================================== This is the one you've all been waiting for! You've been good; you deserve it! + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csusac!zimmer!waldorf.csc.calpoly.edu!decwrl!sdd.hp.com!usc!howland.reston.ans.net!torn!newshost.uwo.ca!csd.uwo.ca!magundi From: magundi@csd.uwo.ca (John MacDonald) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex Subject: sorry, test post. I'm the designer/author of that project, and I'll try to help you. Maplin is a large hobbyist electronics suppliers in the UK, and a common source of components for simple-ish projects. I probably had a couple of MEL12's in the junk box when I designed the thing. Maplin will ship worldwide, I think, although the postage is expensive. I know of no direct equivalents, alas. However, if you can find _any_ NPN photodarlington transistor (basically, a phototransistor in the same package as another transistor to increase the sensitivity), it's worth trying. You may need to adjust the values of the resistors around the first stage, though. If you can get 'sweet spot' fibre optic devices, you might try the Schmitt Receiver unit in that range. That, + possibly an inverter, would make a very simple light pen, I think. Maybe I should try it. >-- >Marc Sira | -- -tony ard12@eng.cam.ac.uk The gates in my computer are AND,OR and NOT, not Bill + - - - - Next Article - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Path: csus.edu!csusac!charnel.ecst.csuchico.edu!xmission!inquo!vyzynz!news1.cris.com!news.sprintlink.net!howland.reston.ans.net!torn!newshost.uwo.ca!csd.uwo.ca!magundi From: magundi@csd.uwo.ca (John MacDonald) Newsgroups: rec.games.vectrex,rec.games.video.classic,rec.games.video.marketplace,rec.games.video.arcade,rec.games.video.misc,alt.games.video.classic,misc.forsale.non-computer Subject: Vectrex multi-cartridges for sale or trade Date: 28 Nov 1995 12:29:19 GMT Organization: The University of Western Ontario, London, Ont.
