INTRODUCTION Sitio do Picapau Amarelo (or roughly The Yellow Woodpecker Ranch) is the setting for the children's books written by Brazilian writer Monteiro Lobato. It is a small farm with a pretty cottage, surrounded by trees and simultaneously close to several other subsettings: the river, the woods, and a small village nearby. Where characters of Brazilian folklores are lived around in the country side's home of it's small farm itself. It's also notable for being one of the last games to be released for the Sega Master System, it is highly collectable because it was only released in Brasil. Finding a complete copy can be tricky, and even most people in Brasil do not own a copy. It's not the rarest game out there, I'd like to say it's pretty uncommon to find it. If you're not emulating this and would like to find a copy in the wild, I suggest Mercado Livre (Brasil's answer to eBay). Some sellers from Brasil are willing to ship to the USA. Beware, it can be costly. Be sure your seller marks the item as a gift! !!! CAUTION !!! If you are playing this on real hardware be warned that early v1.3 SMS Model 1 BIOS' (i.e. the ones that just have the Snail Maze game and no other built in games) will NOT load this game! It will just ask you to insert a cartridge. I do not know if this phenomenon is unique to v1.3 or if it holds true to SMS Model 1's with Alex Kidd, Hang-On, Hang-On/Safari Hunt, or Missile Defense 3-D built in to the system. Please e-mail me if you have more information on this! With that said, you can buy a "Master Mega Converter" or a Power Base Converter in the US to play this game on your Sega Genesis. To play it on a Nomad you will need to solder pin B30 of the cartridge port to Pin 45 on the ASIC. It's tricky, but can be done, and you can even build your own "Master Mega Converter." More details on this will be at the end of this FAQ. 2. CONTROLS The controls on this game are fairly standard. Button 1 allows Pedrinho to fling rocks from his slingshot. Button 2 allows him to jump. The D-Pad, of course, allows him to move around. If you tap and hold left or right he will run in this direction. You must master this semi-awkward style of control in order to jump some of the gaps and jump on rocks. Thankfully, the game is fairly short and the jumps aren't IMPOSSIBLE, but they are annoying! 3. STORY The story begins with Aunt Nastacia saying that she does not feel very well. The children are told that Aunt Nastacia is sick and asked what can they do to help. Doctor Snail tells the children that the Aunt Nastacia is under 'feiticus acumulatus.' And he needs to prepare a potion for her to get well. However, the ingredients that are needed are very difficult to achieve and obtain, those who retrieve them are at a deadly risk. The five ingredients are: Plants that are in a magic cave; blood of a giant dragon, the cap of a Saci, the stick of japecanga 'sarsaparilla' and the hair of Water Nymph (Mermaid). But a full moon is arriving tomorrow and if the children do not return with the ingredients in time Aunt Nastacia will sleep for a hundred years. The children say, "Let's get going!" and now it's time to choose characters. 4. WALKTHROUGH After you are introduced to the story you will have a choice to play one or two players. Select Pedrinho after you choose one player. Playing as Emilia is extremely difficult and I have not been able to complete the game as Emilia. You're welcome to try and if you can pull it off I'd very much like to hear about it! 4.1.1 OUTSIDE THE RANCH You start off in front of the house and my best advice to you is to hold down run and let the two bee nests hit you (I can never time the jumps right) and jump over the snake, keep holding right because as soon as you land you will keep running, as soon as you hit the bridge stop. Move slowly and make your way past the two fish that jump out of the water. Watch out for the hole in the ground and continue running. Watch out for the bees nest and snake, grab the bird to restore your health and jump down the hole with water in it. 4.1.2 SWIMMING UNDERGROUND Now you are underwater, swim all the way to the bottom and hold down and continue your way forward avoiding the fish. If you stay to the bottom this should be pretty easy. The spikes look like they would hurt you but surprisingly they do not. When you reach the end swim up to enter the cave. 4.1.3 THE CAVE Immediately you will notice a blue spider. Jump up directly underneath it to catch it. You will find out why soon. Watch out for the red spiders. It's tricky to time it just right, but you can run underneath them without getting hurt. The third blue spider is tough to reach, usually takes me about 10 tries but it can be done. Just keep trying! You'll come to a stop where you can only fall down. Do so, but hug the wall to the right, when you land start running to avoid the red spider. Grab the other two spiders and avoid the final red spider and fall down. This time you don't need to worry about hugging the wall. Grab the last spider and immediately start running to avoid the red spider. You will come to this peculiar looking creature. He will thank you for finding his little girls (the six spiders you just found) and will allow you to pass. If you do not find all six spiders he will ask you to find them and the level restarts. Now you know why I told you to do retrieve the spiders earlier! 4.1.4 BLOOD OF THE GIANT DRAGON As soon as you enter this new cave fall down and you will land on a platform that will again fall. Just allow it to drop, but avoid the bats. Start running to the left, again avoiding the bats (use your slingshot to kill them if you can). You will have to jump through a small space and once you crawl through this space you will go down a small incline and land on the ground. Look carefully as you will see a pair of eyes, ears, snout and mouth. This is the dragon. Just huge the right wall and start shooting it many times with your slingshot and you will see a drop of blood. Move forward to collect it. Keep traversing left and eventually you will come to a hole and the level will end. 4.2.1 CATCHING A SACI Avoid the first whirlwind! Try to run and jump over it and keep running! It's hard! I almost always get hit once by the whirlwind, maybe you can do better? Anyways, keep running forward and you will run into an old man smoking a pipe. Pedrinho will tell him that he needs help getting a cap of a Saci. Uncle Barnabus will give you a bottle with a cork and a sieve. He tells you to get on top of the whirlwind and bam! use the sieve to separate because inside every whirlwind is a Saci. After hearing this the cutscene ends and you will be standing near another whirlwind. Shoot it with your slingshot until it disappears. Jump on the mushrooms and if you hit it dead center you will begin to jump really high in the air, time the jumps right and make your past the mushroom jumps. There's about 5 mushrooms, when you reach the tree stop and stand directly underneath and shoot the whirlwind. Reach the next screen and you will see a whirlwind that is spinning in place. Jump over the whirlwind to grab the bird and then jump on top of the whirlwind to trigger the cutscene. The saci tells you that there is many dangers in the forest and without his help you will be lost, especially since you picked the worst time at night to travel. He will help you under one condition, return his cap. You will be presented with a choice to return it back. Select Sim (yes). Move forward, avoid the bird. Move all the way to the edge and a large gray bat-like creature appears, shoot it with your slingshot and jump on over it and finally on top to ride the bat over the large gap. Be careful, if you run into him you will loose health. Fly high up and when you reach the tree jump off the bat. Grab the extra life and end the level. 4.2.2 LUMBERJACK A cutscene appears with the Saci telling you that because you freed him he will give you this cap of a Saci who lived to be seventy years old to help Aunt Nastacia. Pedrinho asks how the Saci knows Aunt Nastacia. The Saci asks you think I don't see everything that happens? And tells you to keep moving. Up ahead are some rocks and this part is tricky. Basically, every other rock you land on will immediately fall so be prepared. Watch out for the birds as well. On the next screen a snake will be moving fast and ready to run into you so watch out. Grab the item on the ground, but watch out for the bird and snake waiting to attack. There's another item laying on the ground at the end of the current screen and another bird waiting to attack you. After this screen you will come to a mini boss battle with a lumberjack character. Hit him with your slingshot while avoiding his axes and running into you. Not too hard. 4.2.3 SAFARI HUNTER Avoid the cheetahs and snakes. You will come to an end where you need to jump on a crocodile. Time it right, of course, then after you reach the next ledge watch out for the cheetah ready to come after you. On the next screen, grab the bird and go through the door. At this new screen grab the bird and avoid the cheetah on top of the incline and the other one at the bottom. There's a monkey waiting to throw coconuts at you as well. Reach the end and grab a hold of the glider on the rope and enter the door. On the next screen you can go left and jump on the platform, avoid the snake and perform a running jump to grab a bird power up if you're in need of energy. This is also true for the platform on the right. Watch out for the cheetahs at the bottom. Keep moving right to enter the next screen. Keep moving and don't fall into the animal traps. There is a bird powerup nearby. At the top of the platform is a safari hunter mini boss. Shoot him with your slingshot or jump on his head a few times. At the bridge keep moving forward and don't fall. At the dead end fall down and keep hugging the right wall. On the second platform (I believe it's the second if I am wrong, please e-mail me) keep moving right and avoid the two falling floors (they're easy to spot because they're coloured slightly different). Jump on the moving platform and end this screen. Whew! 4.2.4 THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW Jump on the middle mushroom and push up to trigger a cutscene. Basically, the trees tell you they will not let you pass unless you show them the colours of the rainbow. To do this, press up on the Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple mushrooms in this order. The trees will remark how beautiful the scene is and allow you to pass. 4.3.1 CAVERNA DA CUCA Avoid the cloud shooting lightning bolts and move forward to trigger a cutscene with the Saci. He tells you that you are close to the cave and that the witch has very powerful hearing. He asks you if you want to wear a disguise. Obviously, choose Sim (Yes). Keep moving forward, avoiding the lightning bolts and jump the gap and enter the cave. Shoot the witch with your slingshot, avoiding her projectiles and after you defeat her run forward to avoid the icicles and jump the gap. 4.3.2 MERMAID Jump over the snake and get a running jump and make a large blind jump. You will land on a platform and watch out because this is the tricky part. The trees themselves are bottomless pits. Get a small running jump and jump onto the bushes next to them. You must land on the top-center bush. It's hard to do and will probably take a few tries to learn how to do it just right. Grab the bird if you need it and make two more jumps and jump on the rocks. The white coloured rocks will fall as soon as you land on them, so watch out. Jump on large pair of rocks and make the jump to the rocks on top of the waterfall. Jump down and to the right on the second rock and touch the mermaid. Jump onto the large rock and when you land avoid the snake. Grab the extra life and onto the next screen. 4.3.3 THE FINAL INGREDIENT A cutscene will reveal Dr. Snail telling you that you need the tears of the witch as the final ingredient. He apologizes for forgetting to mention this and as you can tell the children are a little peeved by this! Anyways, you'll come back to the cave. Avoid the projectiles the witch shoots because this time one hit will turn you into a frog! Hit her with your slingshot and after she has been defeated a cutscene is revealed with the Saci will help you squeeze the tears out of her by tying her up with a vine. Walk up to her to grab her tears and she will tell you just take them and to leave a poor old woman alone. A cutscene comes back to Dr. Snail administering the potion to Aunt Nastacia and she wakes up and everyone rejoices. The final scene is a silhouette of everyone at the campfire outside the house and Aunt Nastacia brings out a platter of hot food. And the credits roll! That's it, congratulations, you have finished Sitio do Picapau Amarelo! 5. Eeeeehh ..." 7. FINAL THOUGHTS Sitio do Picapau Amarelo is not a bad game. It has some awkward run and jump controls and some enemies are unfairly placed (like the bee nests). But, for the most part I had fun with it and it can be completed in about an hour if you know exactly what to do and how to avoid obstacles. Another real show stopper for me was the rock jumps. It is very hard to get this right and not goof it up and the final fight with the witch is very hard as well. I don't believe I could finish this game without the aid of the PAR codes. But, I'm sure if I sat down long enough I could pull it off. I'd have to rate it at about 7/10. The game is fairly average for a third-party independent platformer. I do like the story line and it being based off famous stories from Brasil make it interesting.
