What I object to is the fact that promotional material, press releases and even the box packaging imply that the GUS, Adlib Gold and the Sound Blaster Pro are equivalent in terms of providing a MIDI Interface. What isn't stated is that the other cards include the connector as part of the price. Message #86 - General Date: 25-11-92 06:21 From: Ken Menzel To: Sandy Cameron Subject: GS2000 Etc. I have built my own midi interface which works with playmidi, and the program in the developer kit that accepts midi in. If I turn off my Synth before sunning SBOS, then there are no problems. I have a Yamaha DX7 which sends the midi active sense byte every so often, so it would appear that the crash is caused by the unexpected arrival of midi data in while running SBOS. I would guess that SBOS enables midi interrupts, but that there is no handler in SBOS for midi in bytes, so it blows up! Workaround: disconnect midi in while SBOS is installed! For those of you that think that SCII uses the advanced features of the US like on board mixing, I would have to disagree. If you have an old Sound Blaster, the game sounds good, except no stereo. I haven't tried it on a Pro yet. They use a technique similar to what the mod players for our pc's use - mixing the channels together in real time and outputting it to the DAC(s), in my case the US's Stereo DAC's. For these reasons, I wouldn't call the this game a good example to show off the US in particular. BUT, it is still incredible what they have done and I'd bet a lot harder to code than a US wave table alternative. Well, got a little side tracked there, babbling too much! When I installed my GUS I used standard settings and everthing seemed to work fine. Several hours later my computer locked up requiring a hard reboot while I was in windows. I changed some settings on the GUS and continued -- locked up again! Then I found out the disk compression software I use was losing data and was sometimes unable to write to the host drive. Then everything seemed fine for a while and then locked up hours later. When I rebooted then memory countup from my AMI bios started going to a number and restarting or stopping in the middle. Also the machine wouldn't accept a reset, it had to be turned off for a minute or so or else it would lock up in the boot process, before even reaching the config sys file. I removed everything but video, IDE cont and GUS, I tried every address 210-270? (i forget but everyone anyway). still had problems! Now the GUS is in it's static proof bag and my computer is hummming along... what should I do. I have a 486-33, AMI bios, UMC chipset, Fahrenheit 1280 VA (VA disabled) video, IDE drive. This seems to be a hardware problem because it happened before it even reached the config.sys. HELP!!! I was wondering if I could take the memory off my old CY>VGA card (256k) and put it onto my GUS.. is it possiblr? Well, just check the memory type, depending on your video card you will probably not be able to use the memory (I think most video cards use VRAM or something like that as opposed to DRAM) If it is DRAM, just make sure that it is at least 100ns memory (you can usually see this at the end of the chip. 4256-10 (Plus a few letters thrown in by the manuf.) means 4 x 256k, 100ns (this is the memory recommended). If you need to buy the memory, I got the chips at AE Electronics in Richmond for $5.50 each (70ns). Good luck!
