The Adaptec SCSI board uses IRQ 11, so do not use that in your SET ULTRASND= line in your AUTOEXEC file. The way setup works, is that it adempts to identify any or all devices which are currently using the possible addresses DMA channels or IRQ lines of the UltraSound, and then it configures the card to not use anything which is already in use. Since the Adaptec SCSI board is the only SCSI board, that we now know uses any IRQ's, we did not anticipate this type of device to be using an IRQ. First, I am disappointed that you have chosen to make the MIDI connector an optional extra. I ordered the card through mail-order based on early information from your company that indicated that MIDI support was included. Can I order the connector from you? At what cost? My computer is hanging trying to run SBOS.BAT file (specifically the LOADSBOS program. I suspect it may be a conflict with my Logitech scanner card. It can be installed with base address 280h 2A0h 330h or 340h. Each of these addresses is in the ranges that is said to be occupied by the Ultrasound. Can the Ultrasound card be configured to free any of these port addresses? I am getting an error with the PLAYMIDI utility with some standard midi files. The error message I am getting is "LOADPATCH FAILED patchname -7". The patchname varies. Would this problem be alleviated by adding more memory? I tried running PLAYMIDI with the -p switch with no effect. The midi files sound different running under DOS PLAYMIDI than under Windows MEDIAPLAYER. I copied the MIDIMAP.CFG to my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. What more do I have to do? How do I change the volume when running under Windows? Finally, where can I get programming information about the card? Thank you. I have tried without success...it plays a bit of the "SBOS installed" message backwards over and over instead of music...how did you folks get the demo working? Also, I have Links386, and I have tried running SBOS with the -x2 and the -o1 parameter, and every time, it resets the computer and the memory test fails with a "Parity error..." message. I am running a Zeos 486/33 with an Award BIOS... One minor gripe about the card...you should have packed more RAM on the card. 256K is way too little. Couple more things (gee, I'm scatterbrained today...:)...will the USS 10 trax support a "module" format for music, proprietary or Soundtracker? Also, when are those General MIDI patches going to be ready? Jes' wondering... Aside from the SB problems, I really like the way the card sounds. MUCH better than cheesy FM music. Except, the sound blaster sound is literally HIDEOUS. (I don't think that is spelled correctly, pardon me, but I believe you get the point) Anyway, all my games are Military Simulators/Strategy and rely heavily on the Sound Blaster sound. As a matter of fact it makes the games more worth while. I spoke to a tech. at Gravis and he assured me that the board would do well with SB (for short). I implore you to help with this situation or I will unfortunately have to return the board and I really do not want to do this. But to be honest, every game sounds "tinny, weak & tone extensive". I could possibly understand a few older ones but not every one. Trust me, this is not a mean or anger letter but a frustrated question/statement. Also a computer techie that needs assistance so he can keep his board and be happy with the sounds. By the way the actual ultra sounds are unreal- they are wonderful. Please tell me if or who you have heard that is going to support this also. This is very important for me to know. Are there quite a few software companies that are going to support this or no? Please let me knoe cause I can not afford much and this was an elite purchase for me. Actually my early and only Christmas gift from my wife, so, she would like to see her gift work. Your marketing group SURELY, checked this out before commiting to such a cool project. To give you an example, I have just purchased the Comanche Maximum Overkill, excellent graphics and your board would have been the topper with compatible sound. I ordered the card through TY>mail-order TY>based on early information from your company that indicated TY>that TY>MIDI support was included. Can I order the connector from TY>you? TY>At what cost? I'm very glad that Gravis made so many of the GUS's features optional. If you want to do MIDI, buy the connector. If you want to do 16bit recording, by the daughtercard. If you need more memory you can upgrade. The stock GUS is powerful enough for most people's needs. One reason it's so cheap is that all the bells and whistles are optional. The MS readme file suggests the Midimapper as the culprit. Do you have any advice on this? I have a 486-50mh machine with 16 megs and a 400 meg HD with a philips CD-ROM. Will be trying it soon I about to leave for home and thought of something else I wanted to ask.. The Ultrasound board comes with 256K of on board RAM will it gain me anything to increase that RAM to 1 meg?? I mean playing game or games with digitized Voice... also a reminder on the Gunship 2000 funny sounds instead of helicopter blades... thanks! This machine allows you to set the CPU speed from 16 mhz to 8 mhz. I am using the default settings from the setup program, have the board in a 16 bit slot etc. The board randomly works with the machine at 16 mhz, always works with the machine at 8 mhz. The catch is that at 8 mhz, the floppy drive becomes unreliable. My final solution is going to be to take the @#$ HP machine back to work, and buy my own system to use with the ultrasound. Any ideas on what else to try? (Yes i've spent several hours testing different settings!!) Right now I'm set to (220,7,7,5,11). I also noticed that you need to power off after every setup, else setup crashes when you change the values. The same sequences sound great when you let the Ultrasound play them instead of midi out. Any comments? (fix up that midi interrupt handler would be my suggestion!!) Patches are available all over the place to upgrade. The problem I had was making sure I had 614K free after I had my mouse driver and sbos installed. Basiclly I used qemm to lead all the devices high. And it worked fine, unfortunatley Falcon has poor sounds, but their poor on SB as well so don't blame the card. If you want more details leave me a messages and I show you exaclty how to load the game, and drivers. ttul Kal Message #81 - General Date: 24-11-92 18:58 From: Jorge A. Herrera To: All Subject: Speach[D[D[De[C[C Has anyone been successful in getting any games with speech capabilities to talk and play music. I am having problems getting King Quest V, VI and Quest for Glory I all from Sierra Software. I have left messages at the CompuServGravis Bulletinboard, but have not received a response from anyone. If this board will not talk with these games and/or others, I might as well by the Soundblaster Pro and return this card. It would be helpful if any future driver upgrades be posted individually for download instead of downloading the full installation software. I was wondering if anyone could give me the stats on this BBS (nodes, plans for expantion etc etc). PS I have had one problem with my card. When I play a game (namly Star Control 2 which supports the GUS), I get some static. Is this just the power box or could it be something else? Thanks... Great board (just wish it was in Toronto :) Message #83 - General Date: 24-11-92 20:42 From: Jay Daunheimer To: Kal Skulski Subject: CFG Help PLease Replies: #80 <- I haven't had any problems getting Falcon loaded correctly. In fact the sound worked quite well with my old ATI FX sound card. It is either SBOS or my version of falcon causing the problem. I am currently at version 3.0c, you mentioned you have 3.0d. I guess I should look around for a patch. Thanks for your help.
